I'm looking at possibly buying a COLT AR15 in 22 long rifle. I want it for a general plinker for my grandson. When he gets bigger, what would be the issues with converting to a real ar in 223?
Thanks for the help guys. |

Thanks for the help guys. It can't be. It's a dedicated .22lr rifle only and uses proprietary parts and magazines. I believe it's a Colt in name only. If you want something to convert later, put a dedicated .22 upper on a AR lower that can use the Black Dog/ CMMG magazines. |
| Thanks AKAtreestand: I made a phone call to colt and they sent me to an airsoft gunmaker named yumarex. After a little reading on Yumarex's website, I already had an idea that I was barking up the wrong tree when I saw wording like dedicated 22lr. Your post confirmed my fears. I wasn't in the market for an AR but thought I would jump on this deal if it was a 22lr converted Colt AR15 while at Sportsmans warehouse today. |

Pretty darned sure that is impossible. I have only handled- briefly- one of those .22s and read a few threads about it, but the receiver is apparently both 1) proprietary in design, only showing external similarities to a standard AR lower receiver and 2) made of zinc (?) or some other lower-quality pot metal. Additionally I have read accounts of a few of these breaking- there was a thread on here not too long ago where the receiver had completely cracked at the "wrist" between the pistol grip and buffer tube.
I'd recommend just buying an upper receiver dedicated to .22lr and finding a lower receiver and putting it together. Later on down the road, buy a .223 upper. Too easy, slightly more expensive but you will be able to have both .22 and .223 on the same platform and avoid having to buy two complete rifles, which is what you would have to do if you bought the Colt .22. |
