Bushmaster says to run a few hundred rounds through before using brush. You can patch clean it during that time.

There are 2 complete opposite arguments to this:
1. Shoot a round and then clean the bore.  Repeat this for the first 25 to 50 rounds, then increase to two or three rounds and then clean for another 25 cycles.
2. See math's post.

I've done both and didn't get extreme results either way.

A good case FOR break in:

I look at it as insurance; I hope I don't need it, but I'd hate to be wrong. One range day to invest in the life of your barrel.

A very quick search will yield you Gale McMillan's views on barrel break in. LINK While I respect Krieger, I'm going to side with Gale here, until someone can come along with more experience and records than Gale and prove otherwise.

FWIW, this is a 5 shot group @ 100 yards fired from my Lilja barreled  Remington 700 in .223AI. I did no break in whatsoever, and hadn't even touched the bore with a cleaning rod at this point. I'd put over 100 rounds through it (again, no break in and no cleaning since it was new) when this group was fired. I don't feel bad at all about no break in.

Shoot a magazine, clean.
Repeat a couple times.
Enjoy the rifle.

Sight in your iron sights, then clean.  Sight in your optic, clean again.  Done.

(You could clean only once after the optic sight in and still be ok.)
