What says the conventional wisdom regarding fire lapping...particularly a chrome bore ??

lapping a bore may produce beneficial results in a non-chromed bore.
Any attempt at lapping a chromed bore is a waste of time and you'll only be grinding away the thin chrome lining.

This "fire-lapping" fad is also a complete waste of time IMO.

filling your barrel with fire is dangerous.

The only barrels that will benefit from fire lapping are crap ones that were not mfg'ed properly and are full of burrs or monster chatter marks. If you do it on a ok quality or better barrel you are destroying thousands of rounds workth of utility from the barrel.

Last week I helped my uncle replace a barrel for a guy that had basically turned it smooth bore by shooting some sort of gritty "fire lapping" ammo through it.

"Hey, I'm going to make my new car run smoother by pouring a quart of sand into the transmission!"

Thanks all, your responses are well taken.  Someone told me, and I have read about fire lapping to take out the 'high spots' in a bore.  I am old enough and smart enough to get an informed consensious on a subject before I dive in.  Thanks again
