Is there a tolerence to the play in the two? What would the max tolerance be?

I believe that would vary by manufacturer. If you buy a RRA upper and lower, it will be tight. My AR is pretty lose, probably made by different manufacturers. Each company has their own specs that specify tolerances.

The one I have at work (circa 1971 M16A1) is a rattle trap. The rifle is extremely accurate and reliable. This is a governmment $200.00 special offered to local LE.
