I have a CMMG stripped lower that is in need of companion parts. RR kit has been on order for over 7 months. Thinking maybe of getting a CMMG upper and LPK. How do CMMG uppers compare to RR uppers? The stripped lower is getting lonley

CMMG uppers as in complete barreled uppers are superior to Rock River in my opinion
With CMMG you get 1/7 twist, 4150 steel, MP barrel,
Aim has 20" gov't profile here link
And If you can afford it they also have the DD basic M4 upper with sight DD M4

You can get a complete RRA M4 upper at pkfirearms for 515 right now, today, and have it in your hands by next week or sooner.

+1 If you still want to go RRA pk has a huge selection of uppers, they have middies too.

Myself I would go RRA. If you want a good answer instead of personal opinion go to the troubleshooting section and find out how many have trouble with which brand. Then you will have a better answer.

I prefer the RRA.

I think I would too since the ad said the receivers were made of 4150 chrome-moly vanadium steel.

This is rediculous... Their receivers are made of Aluminum, not steel, much less 4150 steel. And last I saw, all RRA barrels were made witrh 4140 steel. Some are chrome, some are not. Some have 223 Wylde chambers, some have 5.56. Most are havey barrels, some have midweight.

Not a lot wrong with the Rock River, but I would preffer the CMMG if given the choice between the two. CMMG has better barrel profiles, better steel in their barrels, more testing, most barrels are 1/7. Look for features, not name brand. By doing this I am more drawn to the BCM uppers.

I own a CMMG mid-length upper.
I see it as a "middle of the road" upper. It has most of the options of a top tier upper, but the execution is just a little more budget oriented.
I don't own any RRA uppers, I've shot one or two though. Seemed to work fine. If you get an RRA make sure you're getting the right options- chrome lining and a 5.56 chamber (also stay away from HBAR barrels unless you're shooting matches).

I'd take a CMMG upper any day over a RRA.

I've got a couple of CMMG uppers and they're great. Good quality and accurate too.

CMMG, no question. On another note, I'm a little curious, what exactly makes it "Budget Oriented"

CMMG for sure.

But if you want RRA, Rainer Arms has a RRA Midlength upper for $475.

Quote from Rainer

The Rock River Arms Mid length upper receiver comes complete with Bolt Carrier Group & Charging Handle. The Mid gas system provide smoother operation and gives extended room for your hands and a longer sight radius over the carbine system. The upper features a medium weight and contour barrel.

Specifications:

■Caliber: .223⁄5.56 NATO Chamber
■Upper Receiver: Forged A4
■Barrel: 16″ Wilson Chrome-Moly Barrel
■Barrel Twist: 1:9
■Muzzle Device: A2 Flash Hider
■Handguard: Mid-Length Handguard

CMMG without hesitation.  I have only gotten quality products from them.  I'm sure RRA is GTG too.

If you have to go with the two, I would get the RRA

I paid $500 shipped for my CMMG middy from AIM last summer. Upper, (semi) BCG, charging handle, & handguards. An LMT or BCM upper is going to cost close to that without the BCG, charging handle, or handguards. CMMG is a little more budget friendly.

CMMG has had some QC issues from time to time. Mostly cosmetic, and they fix them. My upper came with a cracked handguard (promptly replaced my AIM). I have some scratches on the inside of my ejection port dust cover that came from the factory. I also have scratches underneath the finish on my CMMG lower (which I purchased separately from AIM). I don't really care about scratches, so I never really had anything done about them. But some people might not be so understanding...

Thanks guys. I sort of figured they were "about the same" in quality just no real reference. My other AR is a Bushmaster I just want the "fun" of putting one together.  I'll check and see who can get one to me the quickest.  Thanks again

Can't comment about RRA uppers, but I do have a CMMG M4 SOCOM, and she is one BADD Carbine. This piece came with a 14.7" SOCOM
barrel and permed A2 F/S .  It's 4150 and chromed with ramps, and 1/7 twist.   Her A3 flat-top lets me mount a RRA Stand Alone A2 rear
sight and the ARMS cantilever mount for the awesome Aimpoint RDS.  With a traditional scope, she'll shoot under an inch on occasion, if I
haven't had too much coffee at breakfast.  Indeed, the only possible complaints I could have are the slightly less than stellar weld job on the
A2 F/S,  and the slightly bunged up heads on the taper pins.   Overall, very well done, CMMG !

I have the same set up as jaygee and I am super happy with it. It has never failed and is accurate to boot. I looked at the RR uppers but the lack of 1-7 twist made them a non issue for me as most of my shooting is 75-77gr bullets.

Thanks for all the feed back. I (finally) ordered a RR kit form C3W. It arrived in 6 days. Fits real nice on the CMMG lower. Haven't had a chance to take it to the range yet. It is the last RR stuff I'll buy because of their overall treatment of customers. Same quality appears available elsewhere.  I.E my Bushmaster Dissipator is equality good as near as I can tell. (Damn BRD anyway). Thanks again.

Are all CMMG uppers 1/7 on the barrel?  I have a piston conversion that was done on a CMMG upper and I don't see any markings on the barrel, though there might be some under the Daniel Defense rail system.

No they(CMMG) do make a 1:9 barrel as well, but most of their uppers are 1:7 CL 4150 CMV MP unlike the RRA stuff which is no more than a M1S quality upper using 4140 steel, no MP, NO CL, unless ordered and paid extra for just like a M1S upper.
