Maybe it's Colt's answer to the LMT MRP.

But instead of bolts holding the barrel in the upper, it uses paracord.

I was wondering how it got loose?? Shouldnt be able to unless the threads on the upper got worn out or stripped...

Well if any of your (insert brand here) would survive long enough to do what that rifle has done and been through then feel free to bash Colt.

It happens, that's why you torque the barrel nut.
Some armorers don't have a torque wrench so they wing it.
It gets missed during the TI process over the next X thousand rounds
The wobbling steel barrel nut eats away at the receiver threads over time.
Then suddenly, viola! a QD barrel on a M4.

Is barrel installation unit level or depot level? I though it was depot level maint, in which case a unit level armorer should not have a barrel wrench, but should send any weapons with loose barrels to depot.

Correct me if I am wrong.

When I say armorers I mean direct support shops.
I was under the understanding that barrel replacement was a DS level.
Unit armorers should not be replacing barrels, but they should be checking them for wobble and send them in for repair.
Who's fault is it this happened?  Who knows.
Why did it happen?  The list goes on and on...
But it could have been prevented by proper inspection of the weapon.

Is the implication that it came loose/off BECAUSE it's a Colt?

Hmmm .....

I'd say it was because there only a rubber band holding it on in the first place.

ETA: BTW, that IS a beat-all-to-hell looking piece ... I guess none of 'em last forever, especially in training classes, huh. I guess no one got hurt ...

This makes me so much happier than i found my barrel to be loose while at the range a month ago instead of not realizing and continuing to shoot.  First clue to me was that my groups opened up ALOT all of a sudden.

Not sure how he wouldnt realize though, considering how often he shoots the weapon.

Im not
I like colt and other brands as well

Like you already know
Shit happens to any weapon over a period of time

The receiver threads are not smeared, there is a big ding on the barrel extension, of course this could have been caused when the weapon came apart.

My assessment based on the picture is that the barrel nut cracked apart and failed, probably from heavy strain placed upon the weapon at that junction.

You mentioned the Trooper had noticed the weapon was loose at that point previously, he should have turned it in then.

"Have your musket clean as a whistle, hatchet scoured, sixty rounds of powder and ball and be ready to march at a moments notice."

Do the Rangers not teach this any longer or was the prospect napping at the time?????

Okay, so... this common place for Colt's when they've been through a lot?
Other rifles that I've seen that have been beat to death give it up in other ways, failure to fire, failure to feed, failure to eject. Colt's just have "failure to retain barrel," (FTRB) that's much better. No discovery or searching, you can identify the problem immediately.

Of course I'm just yanking the chain here.

The barrel extension is not dinged... that it the M4 feedramp.

It has already been stated that the threads on the UPPER receiver were stripped, not the barrel nut.

Yep, should have been caught with PM long before it did a field expedient detail strip.  Needed to be DX'ed to Depot, ASAP.  We call that WORN OUT(FTW) where I'm from(lol).  Training rifles were usually shit and have always been so.  My issue weapon in basic had been used so much that the anodizing on the receiver was worn off and it had a neat golden color to it.  You could see a (estimated)1/4" of errosion in the barrel throat.   Dang thing was loose as a goose and marked Colt M16E1.  So loose, it was a snap to feild strip and reassemble.  I used to win beer money on my speed on stripping and reassembly.  Bad Boy still shot good, however.  Earned Army Expert on the pop up range.
Anyway, a little 100MPH tape and GTG!  lol.
