If I take the flash suppressor off my AR will it reduce the noise. Are there any disadvantages to taking it off other than more flash?

Why would you want to take it off w/o a replacement?

ETA: I think it will be louder...

I vote no.

If it did anything it would just redirect sound, but I have a feeling you would not notice any difference except maybe a fireball

If you want to reduce the noise, buy a suppressor.

Down side.

You might damage the treads or the crown.

It will not be quieter.

If its a flash hider and not a comp it will probably get louder if you remove it.
The A2 flash hider does a great job protecting the crown of the barrel, without it installed you could eventually damage your crown.
There are a number of different flash hiders on the market, you can always choose one you like better than your current one.
If you are looking for sound reduction head over to the Suppressor section in the Armory tab and read the suppressor FAQ.

in my experience the FH is perceived quieter than firing without one.

i noticed a huge difference between no FH and a phantom on a 16" bbl
