A friend of mine just put a Smith & Wesson M&P on lay away.
I was wondering if he should be looking at RRA or something else in stead of this?  Anything wrong with them?

Well how good of quality is he wanting? M&Ps are pretty good guns, I would not say that RRA are better.

Stick with the Smith, I have seen  these rifles kick the crap out of RRA in many carbine classes..  RRA is a good rifle but the dozen of times in these classes the Smith and Stag beat out the RRA..

As I like all three rifle's that you mentioned, could you define "kick the crap out of" Parts breaking/accuracy?

i have a rra and 2 smith&wesson's. the smiths are closer to mil spec. the gas keys are correctly staked on the smith's and not on the rra. the castle nut is staked on the smith's and not at all on the rra. if i'm not mistaken the smith bolts are cmt which supposedly is what colt uses.

all three are nice guns and have yet to fail me. the rock river is the most accurate ar15 i've ever owned. it has a 1/8 twist stainless barrel with the .223 wylde chamber.

here is my rra next to one of my ak47's.

Had RRA, now have an M&P15...

The very tight upper/lower fit of the RRA spoiled me, so I'm having to relearn living with some play.

Other than that, the Smith & Wesson has had more attention paid to small details and some of the components (as already mentioned). If they would put a 1:7 barrel on the M&Ps, there would be little left to want.

S&W. I got one and then got the M&P 15A and then got the stand-alone T upper a month ago.

M&P's are top-notch! I can't say that I would trade mine for a RRA even though RRA makes nice stuff too.

M&P's have m-4 ramps, troy rails/sights, chrome lined barrels, properly staked Carrier keys, F marked FSB, parked under the FSB(nice for installing aftermarket FSBs), come in mid-length gas system(big + for me), heck some even come with magpul stuff already on them!

What's not to like?

I've got a couple of M&P's and they are both excellent carbines. No malf's of any kind with either of them, ever, even with Wolf. I ran one so hard this weekend that it had smoke boiling off of it and it was uncomfortable to hold and it was still 100%. Excellent accuracy with both. Your friend will definitely enjoy the Smith and I seriously doubt he will ever have any issues with it.

Tell him to enjoy the smith.  It should be G2G

Why would you want that?   it would actually be a detriment to the rifle.   the 1:7 twist is milspec gone wrong on the rifle platform.    you will not find a target rifle 223 with one on it, even on rifles meant to shoot heavy for class 223 bullets.    most will have a 1:10 to 1:12 bore.     even 80 gr + shooters use no more than 1:8 that i have seen.   overstabilizing a combat arm isnt a good thing

Colt makes their own parts, not sure where you come up with Colt using CMT parts.

Anyway, I'll take an S&W over a RRA any day.

I ran a little S&W M&P 15 M4 type gun test this weekend helping a friend sight in a new rifle.  We took it out of the box, added BUIS, Troy Rail, and an Eotech, and took it to the range.

On purpose I put no additional lube on the gun.  I wanted to see witness marks where it may not have been fitted well, if that were the case.

We fired 120 rounds out of the gun.  I had it shooting minute of angle at 100 yards pretty quickly, and this was with a standard Eotech, with no magnification.  Ammo was Federal XM193.  No feed problems, or problems of any kind.  It went BANG when asked every time it was asked.

Upon tearing it apart to clean it, I was please to find NO witness marks of anything rubbing on anything, even with a tight overall fit.  On top of that, the gun was amazingly clean.  Not sure why that was.

Overall, I was impressed.  Cost on the gun was $1149 and it ran and shot as well as any of my Colt 6920's, or Noveskes.  Now I know 120 rounds isn't a torture test, but it is a pretty good indicator of things to come.  Zero problems leads me to believe that this gun will continue to run well.

I would feel confident using one.

M&P is a damned good gun.  At least as good as RRA and probably better.

Of course, I'd tell him to get a Stag, because that's what my black beauty is and I'm biased.

Much better than a RRA.

Never had a problem with my M&P.  Goes bang with whatever I feed it, very accurate, and I wouldn't trade it in for anything.  A very dependable weapon!

The M&P probably represents one of the best values in a gun you can get these days. You're getting a lot for what you spend. A lot more than many other rifles in the price catagory. They are probably top of the heap in the mid-grade rifles.

I love my M&P-15A. No problems, accurate, good fit and finish, well worth the $1089 I spent on it.

My buddy has a M&P and we have them for Patrol rifles at work. They are very good guns and nice to shoot. I carry my personal RRA at work and shoot it very well, better than the M&P's, but suspect that is because I have thousands of rounds experience with it vs the M&P's (which I maybe have 100rounds with).

As for one being substaintially better than the other, like I said I have thousands of rounds through my RRA and have had no problems (all original parts except gas rings). These are mechanical "machines" and will break if pushed and/or not taken care of (we kick the shit out of our guns, both the M&P's and any personal guns and they all hold up). My RRA does exactly what I ask of it, 1) go bang everytime I need it to and 2) accurate enough for head shots at 100yards with iron sights (no problem for me shooting prone, last qualification just messing around I did 9/10 on standard police qual target).

Your buddy is GTG with a Smith or RRA or many other makes/models out there.

Thanks for the info.  I have a Colt 6920 and he likes it but from what I am hearing it should be just as good.  Thanks for the info.

No, it isn't. It is probably the top of the mid-range guns, though.
