Already posted the question in the "Build it yourself" section, but thought I might get a bit more hits over here . . .

Found a "Firebird" Lower . . . I like the price, the rollmark is good, and it should work as intended . . . but my question lies in the caliber marking . . . I understand that the upper is what designates whether the rifle will work with 5.56, but is there any legislation stating that the caliber marked on the lower is the one the rifle must fire? This might be an extremely stupid question, or a misunderstanding in the differences between .223 and 5.56, but I would like to be as thorough as possible on my first build.

And while we are at it . . . any opinions on Firebird Lowers? Haven't seen much said on here about them. I was going to try and link it up with a Larue Stealth 16 in. Thank you in advance for any help provided.

Don't know anything about Firebird lowers but caliber markings don't matter. Can use any upper that fits, .223, 5.56, 6.5, 6.8, .50 BEO, etc.

Yea...I noticed the ATF at range yesterday...they were checking for rifles marked 5.56, and shooting .223 and vis versa.  I think they even found a guy with a 5.56 marked lower shooting a 5.45 X 39 upper.  They took him away in restraints....don't think we'll ever see him again!

Seriously:
I've heard guys say if you have uppers in several calibers, you need a lower that states "CAL: MULTI".  It doesn't matter, even if there is a law, it's not enforced!

My 6.8SPC is on a 5.56 marked lower and it's just fine like it is.

So that means anyone using a .22 conversion can be arrested?

I'm not aware that there is iny requirement for any sort of caliber marking.

Maker name and serial number for sure.

(sorry, hit the wrong reply button)

Not sure I understand what you are implying here - might be my ignorance.  Are you saying it's illegal to shoot .223 ammo if you have a 5.56 lower?

It was a JOKE (and a poor one at that) hence his 'Seriously' comment.
