I guy that I work with has an AR that refuses to run correctly. It's a newer Bushmaster, 16", with collapsible stock.

The problem is that the bolt will occasionally go forward without picking up a new round. This only occurs during actual firing, and never on the first round. It will also occasionally start to pick up the next round, then jam it into the top of the chamber instead of feeding it into the chamber.

I took the gun apart and used my lower- same problem. I then tried my bolt and carrier- same problem. Several known working mags were also tried.

Any ideas?

The gun still short strokes using my lower half, which is pretty much the same set up.

The bolt does not lock back on an empty mag.

Looks like I'm taking the front sight off and checking the gas tube and port.

My bolt also fails to chamber every round, and will not lock back. The carrier screws are tight on both bolts, and the gas rings are correct.

Ammo used was Remington, some Winchester, and Wolf.

In addition to above suggestions.

What ammo?  A new gun with low powered ammo like wolf will short stroke.  Try some other ammo first.

Gas tube bent?

Gas block not aligned with hole?

Gas system was the first thing I thought of.

Try shooting it with 5.56 ammunition for the first 200 rounds.
Run the gun heavily lubed, ie dripping with clp.
If problem persists:
Check the carrier key screws for tightness.
Check/change the gas rings on bolt.
If all else fails send to Bushmaster for warranty repair.
Or Adco to have the gas port looked at.

Might have a burr in the gas port, I had a factory Eagle Arms that short stroked for a while until I had someone take a look under the FSB.  The gas port was partially obstructed.

It's a gas problem

load and shoot 1 rd in the mag at a time to see if the bolt locks on an empty mag... do it about 10-15 times. if the bolt does not lock back, your not getting enough gas.

I'd bet it's gas block/barrel gas port/generally something to do with the gas getting to the gas key.

i had the same problem with a brand new BCG. it turned out to be the gas rings. i was using the pri gas buster and it would do the same as ur friends. i took the BCG apart and cleaned it and switched to a standard charging handle and its good to go. the pri gas buster was letting too much gas by to move my tight bolt caused by the gas rings.
