Hey guys new to the site. I've been reading alot for the past week, and I can see their is alot of knowledge on here. I am an amatuer shooter, that has been into both pistols and long guns for awhile, but mostly self taught. I recently decided to buy an AR-15 do to lack of interest in my other firearms. From what I've read and heard from friends, Bushmaster and RRA are good starting points. What should I look for at my local shops? What models, barrels, uppers, lowers etc... should I look for? I know skies the limit, but I am new to AR's and price is a concern (granted I don't want to spend alot down the road).

Sorry for the lengthy post and thanks in advance

A very nice all around rifle is a RR varmint in 16 inch, 1 in 8 twist.  16 inch to keep the weight down and 1 in 8 twist to be able to shoot the heavy bullets with accuracy. Stainless // free-floated// 2 stage trigger. Add a nice one piece Armalite mount and a 4 power scope or maybe a "middy " 16 inch in another configeration type with a 1 in 7 twist .

Welcome.

What you get out of an AR is what you put into it. That being said, think about what you want it for. Is it for hunting, home defense, or target shooting, etc.

I"d advise you to think thoroughly about what you plan to do with your AR the most (80-90% of the time), and base your decision upon that.

That being said, any rifle from a decent manufacturer (Armalite, Bushmaster, Colt, DPMS, RockRiver, Stag, etc) will do you just fine.

"Most" people new to the AR start with a 1:9 twist 16" Barrel, flat top upper, with an M4-style collapsible buttstock. Hard to go wrong with that configuration for "all-around" use, if there is such a thing.

Do some reading on the site, particularly the tacked threads and try to learn a lot before buying.
