Which manufacturer makes the best M4?

I dont know if there is a best, but Colt is the closest to complete mil spec as you can get.

Define "best".

If you mean milspec, then Colt or LMT.

However, please realize that milspec is what the government defines as the minimum standard acceptable for usage, and contracts fo to the lowest bidder.

If you really want the best, build your own.

Not a bash on Colt, LMT or any other brand, but realize that every rifle is built to a QC standard, which is human by nature, and subject to oversights/failures...or not.

Does that mean home built, or custom rigs are built by machine, and, therefore, not subject to "human nature"?

OP, what are you really asking?  Which to buy?  Which is most authentic?  Best how?  Practically every AR manufacturer makes a rifle with some sort of advantage over another.  Some are low priced.  Some are no expenses spared.  Some are incredible rifles with incredible price tags that many would say aren't worth the money.  Some are so cheap that they're not worth the money.

What are you looking for?

Best 'manufacturer' meaning the best complete factory rifle I would say LMT. Best M4 I would say
RRA lower and LPK with either a Bravo Co. or LMT upper.
The good thing about this platform is, unlike x wives and girlfriends, you can glean the best qualities and traits from each company and make a 'best' AR.

The correct answer is Colt. They're the only company who actually knows what the definition of M4 is, since they created it, and since it is proprietary.

Yes, yes, yes. And ONLY Colt makes 1911s. Petty semantics. Talk about beating a dead horse.

as far as noveske. meh...  they make a barrel, thats it, everything else on a noveske   someone else makes.   and none of it is battle proven over years of testing

Exactly what I just did, only have to decide which upper to keep.

As for a complete rifle, 6921, but it's an SBR. I am not a colt fanboybut if you're asking for high quality and closest to a true M4 then there you go.

You'll never get your hands on "the best M4" unless you're in the military or LEO, you have about $15K to spend and can legally own one where you live, or you're a member of a Mexican drug cartel.

I think it's dumb that manufacturers call their semi-auto clones "M4's" just because they put an M203 notch in their 16" barrels.

Yeah ok, try putting a bayonet on your 16" M4.

Colt is the only manufacturer of the M4.

I have two Olimpics and I LOVE them! They shoot great!! I have a Nikon 3-9x40 scope on one of them and it gets awesome groups at 100 yards. I know there are other brands that are WAY WAY WAY BETTER but hey if your on a buget they are a good rifle. Plus you can get two of them for the price of one colt.

Yes we all know that a colt 1911 is the BEST there is and that nothing can stand against it but if your on a buget there is lots of cheaper 1911`s out there.

Can't go wrong with any of the top-end makers:

Colt
LMT
Noveske (though Noveske is really more of an assembler... they only MAKE the barrels)
BCM upper on any decent lower

Don't get too tied on on price.  Over the life of the gun you'll spend at least several times the cost of the rifle on ammo.  It doesn't pay to get cheap up front.

Every M4 is an AR15, but not every AR15 is an M4.

FWIW, the M$ on the receiver is kinda meaningless.  A "real" M4 is a select-fire weapon.  No happy switch, no "real" M4.  Having said that, the top wrung M4rgeries are close, minus the F/A FC parts, and the Colt is compliant with the TDP, minus the selec-fire and barrel length.... and you can get the correct barrel length if you do the paperwork.
5/10/2009 5:45:41 PM EDT
[#31]
The Colt 6921 is the closest thing you can have to a real M4.  A real M4 is a Colt and only a Colt.  The upper receiver group on the 6921 is the identical one found on the M4.  Same assembly line, same spec, 100% dead on.  The lower is as close as you can get without F/A FCG.

Yes, milspec is the minimum, yet almost no brands meet it or exceed it.  "Lowest bidder" is not accurate.

If you really want the best, build your own.

Not a bash on Colt, LMT or any other brand, but realize that every rifle is built to a QC standard, which is human by nature, and subject to oversights/failures...or not.

A rifle built with substandard parts in someones basement or garage is not equal to the quality of a factory rifle from a respected manufacturer/

What makes an RRA lower and LPK better than and LMT lower and LPK or a Colt lower and LPK?  I'd much rather have a complete LMT rifle than an LMT upper on an RRA lower.

What are you talking about?  They do have the F/A carrier if you order it that way, and if you order the complete rifle (not just the complete lower) you will get the H buffer.  LMT has the H buffer option.  If you buy a stripped lower with a carbine buffer, just spend the 15 bucks on the H buffer and pop it in.  What else is less than spec?  The fact that they don't park under the FSB?  Big deal.

The m203 notch is considered an M4 profile barrel, that is why they use this term.

Carbine Buffer
No Park under FSB
Non-taper pins for FSB

Is it a big deal, no not really.  I was lucky enough to sccop an LMT upper up a few weeks back.  Colt or LMT will serve you well.

The original question was best factory M4 though, in which the 6921 slightly edges out the LMT offering.

Like I said, LMT sells the H buffer, it's and 15 dollar and 5 second swap, or you can just order you rifle with one.  No park under FSB and non taper pins is just a different way of doing it.  No one has ever had an FSB come loose from strait pins.  Colt uses over sized FCG pins in their semi auto rifles.  So I guess Colt is out of spec on their own specs.

That chart needs updating, so the Colt line has X's all the way down, because my new(and all new as far as I know) LE6920 has .054 FCG pins instead of the .070 pins the older rifles had.

So perfect score for Colt now.

After all the rave of the RRA rifles I thought they would have ranked a little better, but CMMG looks like the lower priced rifles is the better choice according to spec's.

It does look it could use an update. When exactly did that chart come out? It seems like I've seen it popping up for a few years now. I have a S&W M&P15-X  and it definately has the m-4 feedramps.

dose the 6920

so the Hbuffer is an option?  and the FA carry is an option? not standard?

and what about reports the threads on the LMT are not concentric to the bore?  so no can?     That is reported by a very well respected member of this board..

guys I love LMT myself  and the SOPMOD stock is the best, but the sopmod stock does not  effect mechanical function of the gun.   please dont take my comments as LMT bashing cause its not

BTW my COMPLETE LMT came with neither
