use acrilic pain, it bonds good, and has flex to it, i have used it on lots of time, IMO works the best, stands up to solvents, and if you want to remove it its easy as well.

You can use this method... Its easy to take the color out if you want...

You will need:
AR-15 or other gun you want to color
1x hair dryer
1x piece of cardboard
1x soft cloth (socks work great)
cleaning solvent (Hoppes No. 9 works great)
1x crayon of any color

Directions:
1. Put the AR or other weapon on your lap and blow hot air on it with the hair dryer
2. Once the metal is hot move the crayon over the heated area that you want to color. The crayon wax will melt and seep into the engravings
3. Take the cardboard and lightly scrape the excess crayon wax off the gun
4. Take some cleaning solvent and put it on the soft cloth and wipe lightly in a circular pattern until excess crayon wax is gone
5. Enjoy
