I wanted to buy a Bushmaster before the election and never did.  I could get one then for $850 from my local shop.  Had a little time to kill today and stopped in to the same shop.  The same gun now sells for $1200.  I looked around and everything he had was jacked up.  He had Glocks for $650.  He was selling them for $500 before the election.  He was selling .22 shells for $10 a box.  Here is my question, can I build a rifle cheaper?  I see some finished lowers for sell for less than $350 somewhere in this forum (can't find the thread right this second).  What else (basics) am I going to have to purchase to finish building one?  Can a complete newby handle this job?  I don't want a piece of junk when I am done but I also don't want to sink $2000+ into one either.

When I was looking to buy, I couldn't for the life of me find a "stock" rifle that got me excited. I couldn't find a single one that had everything I wanted, so I decided to build.

There was no instant gratification because the parts were not readily available, but it was worth it in the end. I spent a little more than I wanted to, but that was because the more I read on here, the more I wanted to upgrade this or that.

My vote is to build. It's a good way to learn and know the in's and out's of the weapon. You have an extensive resourse of knowledge right here to help you every step of the way.

Saving money on a build depends on a lot.  You CAN save on a build but you have to be patient. If you buy a stripped upper like I did you need tools to finish it off properly.  If you find a cheap lower and a cheap upper you're made.  LPK are about $100 on the EE and I think $60 from RRA.  Cheapest lower I've seen is second ammendment for $80.  Factor in shipping and FFL fees and it might be less expensive.  Building a rifle for under $1200 is possible.  It's just a matter of how cool of a rifle you want.  I'm building two but it's a lot of waiting on my part.  I have to wait until the right barrel for the right price comes in.  Then I have to hope I have money.  I'm not going to put it on a card just because I want it.

Denny has the lower you want, or he can make what you want and it won't cost you an arm and a leg. Same with the upper, you can get a complete upper and then you would just need your bolt carrier group and charging handle. denny post on the EE. I have purchased from him and he is great to deal with.

Yeah, Denny is a good dude. I bought one of his 16" custom Noveske uppers he made last winter. That came with a BCG and CH. For the price it cost, I'd hope so! (Not a knock on his pricing. It's assembled with top notch components.)

Great looking rifle, good price, but how looong is the backorder wait time?

Last February, I saw Armalite ARs for less than $1,000.00 at a Gun Show and at Dunham's sporting goods.  If you want to build one - fine but if you shop around, you should be able to find one at a reasonable price.

They were in stock as of today. Not sure how many they have left though.
