Can someone tell me what the major differences between these two rifles are. I understand the SDM-R is ARMY and the SAM is USMC, but I am wondering if there is a major difference between the two. Most of the pics of SDM-R's do not have SS barrels, while most of the pics of the SAM that I have seen are all SS barrels. This has me confused because I thought the SDM-R used a Douglass SS barrel?
One difference that I do notice is the SAM uses a folding FSB while the SDM-R uses the set screw FSB. Any other differences?
Thanks!

The stainless barrels are usually blackened.  Marine Corps uses a different method that doesn't seem to hold up as well.

Both have stainless barrels (the SAM-R uses Kriegers, the SDM-R Douglas).

The SAM-R uses a KAC folding front sight and a Knight rail.  The SDM-R has a Daniel Defense rail with steel barrel nut.

The SAM-R uses a tuned M16A1 single stage trigger.  The SDM-R uses a KAC or Geissele 2-stage match trigger.

To the best of my knowledge Weapons Training Battalion at Quantico hasn't made SAM-Rs in years and I believe (as of 2008) the Marines are buying Mark 12 Mod 1 rifles on a limited basis.

Do both barrels have the fluting under the hand guards?
On the DD hand guards... which ones are being used?
Also, what about the rear buis? Which one does the SAM-R use and which one for the SDM-R?
Any idea why the USMC is switching to the SPR? Weight, barrel length?
Thanks

The SDM-R is fluted, the SAM-R is not

Daniel Defense M4 Rail 12.0 (12") w. steel barrel nut

Knight's Armament BUIS (looks like the 300m version) for the SAM-R, MATECH BUIS for the SDM-R

Don't know why, or the weight, but the barrel is the standard (for the SPR) 18" version profiled for the OPS Inc. collar/break/suppressor.

Thanks for the replies.
If one was going to go the SDM-R route with a WOA SDM-R barrel and Young NM BCG - what would be a solid upper receiver to use? Larue? What about Armalite upper/lower combo?
Anyone else put this combination together?
Thanks!

I am in the process of building a S-DMR style upper right now.  I just received my WOA DMR barrel last week and I've sent it out to Springer Precision for Ion Bonding.  It will be built with a LaRue Stealth upper w/M4 cuts that's sitting in my safe.  I have decided to go with a 12" LaRue rail and I have a Bravo Co. BCG for it.  I've thought about the Young NM carrier, but I'm not convinced the Young BCG will be any better than the BCM BCG.  For optics I'm looking at a Leupold Mark4 3.5-10x30mm LR/T in a LaRue mount.  The lower is a Kaiser Defense with a Gieselle DMR trigger and a A2 stock.

Thanks for the reply. This is very similar to what I was thinking. The only reason I was considering the Young BCG is because that would probably be easier to obtain right now. I don't believe there is an eta for the BCM BCG. Very nice choice though and I too agree the BCM is just as good as the Young. I really like the Larue rails as well, but I was thinking of using the DD rail that military is currently using. I wonder how these compare? I am thinking the same FCG as well. What about your lower, what made you decide to go with the Kaiser lower?  Also, what made you decide to go with Ion Bonding? Was your barrel bead blasted?

I'm going with the BCM BCG because it's the spare that's sitting in my safe.  Young makes good stuff so I'm sure you'll be fine with it as well.

I went with the Kaiser lower as it is not banned by name in California.  They're made locally to me here in California and can be had at a good price, and they are made to spec.  As I had selected the Giessele DMR trigger, the proper location and size of the trigger and hammer pin holes is critical.  Stag is also available to me as an option, but their pin holes are oversized.  The KD lower is just a well made receiver.

The DD rail is the true DMR fore end but it requires a proprietary wrench to install the barrel nut.  I didn't feel like buying a wrench for a single install and no one around here has one for me to borrow.  I have been very happy with my LaRue rails and they don't require special tools to install.  I know it won't be a true clone of the DMR, but I'm building for function so I know it will work fine.  I think both are comparable in terms of quality.

The barrel was not bead blasted like Novekse barrels are, it had the typical turned SS finish.  I'm not a metal worker so I'll leave someone else to tell me what the proper term for the finish is.  I have seen IB finished barrels before and I think the finish enhances and protects the barrel from normal abuse and wear.  Honestly this is optional, but I wanted to try it.

I had a Kaiser lower on a build I sold. They are really nice, especially the finish.
