I just purchased my first AR yesterday,

I bought a CMMG M4LE A3
16" 1/9 Twist WASP coated barrel

There is virtually no information on this gun, if you have some please share...

Also what ammo would you recommend for the range and what ammo for home defense.

Thanks,

Congratulations on your purchase, welcome to the AR world. For general blasting and plinking, I generally just use surplus stuff, but for actual target shooting and what not I have started experimenting with black hills ammo, as I do not yet have to means to start reloading

I cant tell you what to shoot but I`m pretty sure you shouldnt shoot steel cased ammo like wolf because of the laquer on the cases.

Yea the only info that came with the gun said do not shoot wolf or any other steel ammo bc it voids the warranty.

Any info on something for home defense, I'm looking for something that won't penetrate too many walls and what not.

Thanks,

Stick with quality brass cased Ammo. Just my advice.

That's what I was told. Green case means lacquer finish.

BTW, welcome to the show. You bought a nice rifle.

a lot of wolf ammo has been fired in ar's without any troubles, but then you have a few that clain their ar's don't like , try some for yourself .

Good ammo Hornady , Federal Premium, Black Hills ..... i use hornady tap for home defense. But i'd sugest you do some reading in the ammo forum and pick what best suits your needs.

Wolf is fine for plinking  it won't cause your ar to catch on fire as some people will try to get you to believe.
I've gotten one bad case of wolf in more cases than i could count fired though various rifles. I contacted wolf and they replaced that case of ammo.
The only real issue with wolf is don't fire wolf then brass case ammo without cleaning it first....... and clean your gun after you shoot.

Welcome aboard.

I suggest you read this and make an informed decision.

I personally use 55gr hornady tap but lots of people say it doesn't penetrate deep enough....... i take that risk because i want to make sure it doesn't over penetrate.fixed link

Wolf isn't lacquer coated anymore.  And even when it was there weren't any problems with the lacquer coating.  That is a gunshop BS rumor.  There is nothing wrong with shooting steal case ammo.

Thanks, and with a 30rd mag I'm not very worried about under penetrating... I am however concerned about over penetrating.

Thanks again,

The propblem only shows up when you switch from steel cased to brass cased ammo without cleaning the chamber first.  Otherwise I have sent a lot of wolf and brown bear down range both laquered and non with no issues.
