I'm looking into getting a free-float for my Rock River Entry Tactical. I'm going to go the DIY route. I was looking at this Yankee Hill here one but I'd like your opinion on this (I don't do builds).

Thanks in advance,

I'm using a YHM free float; not that particular model, but a similar one.  Mine's a bit older, it doesn't have the anti-rotation screws or threaded holes for swivel studs.  But it definitely improved the accuracy of my rifle.  I feel like I got my money's worth from YHM's product.

I had a YHM FF railed handguard, the LITE model.  Locked up tight, but the railed had a slight oval shape to it.  Rail covers were a BITCH to put on, most likely cause the rail was slightly out of spec.  I didn't like that it wasn't T-marked as well.

The YHM is a good in-expensive FF handguard, there are better ones out their if you have the money.  I'd look at Troy or MI.  If money is a factor and all you are looking for is an inexpensive rail and you don't have astronomical requirements for the gun, it should work just fine.

I have a YHM Light on my spr. If this is your first railed ff you will not be disappointed, but if you've handled higher end models than you'll be wishing for more.

I put a YHM on my Bushy but if I could do it all over again I'd save up a little more coin and get a M.I. or a Daniel Defense. I only spent a $100 on mine but if you look real hard you can get into a Midwest for $140+-

for the money several here use them and feel there great for rec shooting and I agree, however, if I were going into harms way, I would prefer a more proven platform like the LaRue, DD, PRi, KAC etc.

From what I have heard it's an OK system.
Something a bit more proven would be a VTAC handguard which has the "rails where you need them" concept.
It's about $60 more for a product that you can configure exactly how you want it.
Found HERE.
IMO it's a sturdier system and looks to be more comfortable.
YMMV, IMO, etc.

I prefer M.I. or Samson.

What differences can I expect in terms of quality with a different company say MI? There have been a few posts about how the YHM rail is or might not be up to par in a combat scenario, how would that be? Is it a matter of it not being solid enough? Thanks for the input guys.

The YHM and a few others like Larue, (I think), require removal of the front sight and barrell nut/delta assembly.  When I get my new barrell and build my first upper from scratch I think I will use the YHM lightweght one.  MI and Troy guards fasten around the barrell nut but require removal of the delta assembly.  For easy install, I like the DD Omega as there is no mods to the rifle necessary and it uses the factory delta assembly.  I used a DD on my carbine and it locks up nice and tight.  I have one Troy 10" on a Sabre upper and it's also very nice but seems a little heavy.
