I'm currently running an 18" barrel. My rifle serves two roles (bench/prone at 200 yards with a 10x scope, and CQB/three gun with a 1x optic, aren't LaRue mounts great?). Anyway, I'm thinking of having the barrel cut/rethreaded to whatever length having my brake perm. attached will give me a 16" barrel.
The question is whether cutting 3.5" give or take off my barrel could potentially decrease my accuracy at 200 yards. I'm very very happy with the accuracy of this gun, and if cutting the barrel will ruin it, it's not worth it for weight savings/better maneuverability. |

Sorry for butting in but what profile is your 18" now and is it a rife length gas system. I am looking at having my 20" Hbar cut down and profiled to gov. thickness under the hand guard. Just trying to find out how these set up's have worked for people. Not sure, actually. It's a complete LaRue Stealth upper. Midlength gas system. |

Not if you send it some place that knows what they are doing. +1 I have to agree with that! I had a standard Colt A1 20"er cut down to 16" and it is more acurate now than it was before. |

Velocity will almost certainly drop, but probably not enough to notice for most purposes. 2. Accuracy may be affected, but that could go either way. Barrels vibrate like a sine wave. If cutting the barrel moves the muzzle closer to the 0 line of the sine wave, accuracy could improve. This vibration pattern is why barrel tuners work. 3. Simply cutting the muzzle enough to freshen the crown could improve accuracy. 4. Will make more of a difference in a free float barrel with no front sight installed. 5. You'll never know what your individual barrel will do except by trial & error, which is essentially irreversible. FWIW; AFAIK; IMHO; YMMV; yadda, yadda, yadda. Pro2A, ask the Larue folks to get you the size of the gas port on their 18in and 16in.
Going from 18 to 16 is likely no gas port issue, although it could be; 18 to 14.5 is a stretch. I'm not sure which direction the port needs to go== if you are shortening the barrel. I also don't know how/whether you can make the port smaller. Bigbore knows, as I'm sure others here know. |
