Has anyone purchased Bushmaster's $400 Gas Piston Retrofit Conversion Kit and actually done the conversion?
I was thinking about doing this for my 11.5" SBR.

Can you elaborate as to why not?

The adams arms piston system seems to me to be the best of the drop ins because the carreir was designed to prevent tilting down when cycling that causes wear on the inside bottom of the buffer extension also the carrier uses a spring behind the bolt kind of how the HK416 bolt carrier group works. The action spring on the adams ars is one complete unit and when the rod hits the carrier because of the spring loaded bolt it unlocks kind of like a DI system and the bolt isnt ripped from the barrel extension like other piston systems. That being said I see the desert with its sand storms and fine powdery sand is the only real challenging environment for the M16 series.I live in the north east in a city environment and at the harshest woulkd go farther north in an emergency and the M16 series should have no problems in those environments if I do my part so for me DI operation isnt a handicap.

I bought one and wrote a review last year. It added a small amount of weight, cost $400, increased recoil, worked 100% until it broke after 150 rounds, Ares has been nonresponsive. The bolt still got dirty.

I installed the Ares kit in one of my carbines about a year ago.  About 1500 rounds through it to-date with no problems.  Cycles beautifully, but don't thinks its worth the $399 I paid for it.  Shows a small amount of wear at the entrance to the buffer tube due to carrier tilt, but not really a big deal.  The stock DI gas system works just fine....save your money for something else like ammo.

For drop in id go adams or pws. If I had to choose between those two it would be pws.
