Mosquito season is coming up soon!
I've had all sorts of stuff damaged by repellant containing Deet.  The stuff works well so I don't plan to switch (yeah, I know I'm gonna die anyway).
Will Deet damage anything on my 6920?  Soften the stock, remove metal finish, etc?
Perhaps a bigger problem with my Leupold scope?
I once had a Casio plastic watch that was destroyed by Deet; it didn't just soften the plastic, I had chunks of molten plastic stuck to my arm.
Your experiences?

It wouldnt surprise me if some bug sprays wouldnt eat the plastic parts a little. But Im not for sure.

Lancer Systems lists Deet as a major item that will damage their non metal Mags. This tells me that Deet could damage any non metal AR part.

I would definitely try not to expose the finish of my weapon to DEET, and if it did get exposed, I would remove it PDQ.

(Read the can label - I'll bet it even says something on there about possible damage to certain finishes.  Amazing we put the shit on our skin, eh?).

Deet is some nasty shit. I've had it tear up all kinds of things over the years (spools on fishing poles, a headlamp, the scales on a swiss army knife, etc.)

And yet I still use it because I hate mosquitos worse than whatever cancer it will probably give me 30 years from now.

I have had DEET put big gross divots in the plastic handguards and butstock of one of my rifles. KEEP DEET AWAY FROM YOUR PLASTIC!

I know that bug spray eats certain kinds of plastic.

Deet eats most plastic interior car trim too.

In my personal experience I have never seen DEET products damage military M16's

However I have seen DEET destroy many other things, including a cell phone of mine.  IIWY I would keep it away from the weapons.

I personally like this stuff. Stumbled across it at my local sporting goods store when packing for Boundary Waters. Use it all the time and the only thing I hear from others is that they don't like the smell. (citronella is a major ingredient). And as any other bug spray you don't want it on your fishing gear. Last summer I couldn't find it and used some Deet Deep Woods Off. Got eaten alive! Little bastards would land and bite me 2 seconds after spraying. Next day found the Natrapel and was fine while others using the Off were getting chewed on.

I've heard it will SERIOUSLY screw up the frame of a Glock.

Listerene (the mouthwash) works better then any bug spray, and it is much cheaper then it...Pour some in a spray bottle, and spray your clothes down.  Not sure how the alcohol base will affect any of your firearm parts.  It won't only keep them away, it will kill them if they land on you.

Not to hijack but this is worth looking into. We have sand fleas here that molest you while bathing in DEET.

Yeah that's interesting.  I am a mosquito magnet - I can be standing there with five other people, and the little bastards will swarm on me while leaving the others alone.

I read an article about this and some scientists think that people who have more cholesterol on their skin (which is good, because it means your body is processing it more efficiently) attract more mosquitos.

I'll have to try this Listerine trick this summer, when the Ohio state bird is out in force again.

EDIT: But, (ahem - cough cough!) back to the "technical" discussion now.

I've gotten Deet on my Glock 19 frame and had no problems, although I wiped it off at the end of the day.  Some chemistry guy tried to disolve a Glock frame using anything he could find in the lab and only managed a slight softening when left overnight in something awful.  OTOH, I understand that DEET will totally ruin the snap-on Glock lights.  Similar appearance to the frame but obviously different plastic.

I would expect the military to require the M16 to be Deet-proof, but you never know until you try it.

I'm a big believer in treating my cammies with Permethrin and then just using a non-Deet repellent on exposed skin.  After losing a watch to a Deet based issue insect repellent, I decided I didn't want to ever put that on my skin again.

The buttstock and handguards that were ate by my deet experience were on my issue M16A2, granted it was old as hell and plastics have probably improved in the last 20 years, but that tought me to keep it the heck away from my ARs...

If the handguards are milspec thermoset, they will be fine.  These are fiberglass reinforced Bakelite or similar polymer.  But some are made from ABS which WILL soften and melt.

Nylons are unaffected by DEET.  A2 stocks are fine as are some magazines.

Trijicon warns customers to keep it away from your acog.....Seems that it really affects the fiber optic housing on top. hey go as far as mentioning that if you are a Deet user...... they have a different Fiber optic housing that resists Deet better...... That is some Bad Ass Stuff.....to eat through plastics....and still not keep them Georgia Skeeters away.......

This is going to sound crazy, but an old guy I used to go fishing with swore by vanilla extract.

I tried it once and it seemed to do the trick. Might have to try it again, next time I go out.
