Got me one of those Magpul enhanced trigger guards.
Looks like I need a punch and a mallet???? to install. Anyone have advice on how to take the old guard off and install the new Magpul one? Thanx in advance. |
| i put afew drops of clp on the roll pin stick it in a drill chuck and drill it in slow but stop when there is about 1/8" remaining and use a pin punch the rest of the way....if you use this method make sure the chuck is tight or the drill tip will slip and mar your lower. |

I will tell you that those roll pins are not easy to punch out and some force will be needed. But like the first post reply said, "protect the ears"! He said so you wont bend them but what it realy means is they are easily snapped off if you do not support the opposite side when using the punch. Check this link and you will understand.

| I put in a MIAD with the trigger guard front strap recently. I like the upgraded grip and look (so I'm vain) of the spacious guard. Being a newb, I did see/hear/read about breaking the ears off while trying to install or remove the roll pin, so the site saved me from that fate. What I did was take a socket wrench socket, put masking tape around the rim and rested the tab on that, being careful that the front 'corner' of the tab was resting on the rim of the socket so there was support at multiple points. Since it's hollow down the center, the pin just drops down in as you knock it out with the punch. |

Quoted: Rainier sells one that installs with set screws. No hammer required. It is the real MP trigger guard that is modified. Huh, do you think it's worth it? I've buggered up just about every part of an AR except that. I always manage to get the triggerguard on. |

Are they charging a premium for it vs. the "regular" MP trigger guard They are more money due to the cost of materials (inserts and screws) and labor to install the modification. I know cause I do the modification, my idea. If MagPul made them they could be a little cheaper. I did 100 of them a few weeks ago for them. They are worth it if you don't want to risk damaging the lower. |

Yeah, I was wondering about that ... if they were a "Magpul OEM modified" item, or something that the vendor was doing themselves. So anyway, how much for the tricked out version |

Doesn't seem like a hard modification.. just add a helix coil and find the right looking screw for it. It does make it look pretty clean rather than just a open hole. I might modify mine later. I use exclusively MP trigger guards.. they are the best looking thing I've ever seen. |

Use a c-clamp to support the ears when pushing the roll pin out. Use a punch or allen wrench and a mallet to push the roll pin out. Then use the c-clamp to push the roll pin back in. If performed this way, the ears are not stressed at all. Got any pics of the method / process ? |
My Magpul trigger guard folding version, I also have the non folding model on my other carbine. I wanted to use the wood block method but can't find any in the house so I just use my FSB cradle which already have holes for the pins to go thru. I used my pin punch and 8 oz brass hammer and removed the original pin a little at a time with light hammer strikes, just be patient and don't use excessive force. To install the new roll pin I used the vise grip method (link below) then finished up again with the punch, hammer and support. Assemble Your Own LOWER, UPPER, ......
