I am looking at a quad rail. Need a chaper one so lookng a YHM or maybe a troy, but is there really a difference between (worth the extra money) the free float vs a two piece?
|

What is your intended use for the gun?
ETA: For a general purpose carbine for defense, plinking at the range etc there is no benefit to a free float. To print tiny groups, the free float can benefit but you will never notice unless you are a good enough shooter to notice the benefit. |

Well it is kind of weird. I am military and have used both free float and drop in. However, my traing is in CQC so being off a milimeter is not bad when your target is a few feet away from you.
Yes we engage at 300m and closer but how far off would the round be. Honestly I have not noticed a difference even with a foreward grip. I am I missing something? This is for my personal rifle. I have 4 AR's non have a free float. Trying to get more people's input. |

ok, yes I am being kind of cheap, but I do have a little bit of money to spen. I just dont want to spend like $300 for a quad rail.
This is the second time I have heard of the YHM Diamond series. I do like that there is no space from the upper to the rail. I have a RRA trigger in it and an Eotech optics. I will get the Eoctech manififer next. |
| Previously stated had issue with Troy, but has since been swiftly and effectively handled by Bob in thier tech support team and Samantha, Thanks to both. they are a fine example of the customer care that has made Troy industries a leader in the bussiness. Rest assured Troy stands behind thier products. BTW Love thier battle sights, have them on all three of my AR's. |

look at dd omega. drop in installation, free floats the barrel and it is rock solid. He's trying to be cheap. Otherwise it a great choice ... OP, YHM free floats are easy to install and in the same price range of decent drop ins. (Don't buy UTG). "Don't buy UTG?" Why? I have yet to hear a decent argument as to why you should not buy the UTG drop in rail system when I have one and it works great. |

Quoted: I just got the YHM diamond series. I think it looks much better than the other free floats that they make because the rail goes all the way to the receiver. http://i572.photobucket.com/albums/ss168/BS68280/IMG_1981.jpg http://i572.photobucket.com/albums/ss168/BS68280/IMG_1995.jpg Two questions for you: 1. Do you like the SOCOM stock? I got one, and couldn't get it to mount tight to my receiver. 2. Is that a tactical shaver? |
| If you're going to spend that much money on a rail, I'd spend a little extra and get the ff one. I have a rifle that will shoot 1.5" groups with cheap ammo, the only kind I have on hand. Knowing it wouldn't make much difference in accuracy I went ahead and put a MI dropin rail on it and of course it still shot the same. I just couldn't help but find out if the groups would shrink even more if it were free floated so I just had to order the DD Omega the other day based on lot's of positive recommendations on here. So if you ever think you might want to shoot for accuracy, go ahead and free float it now instead of wondering later, "well, what if???". I can't wait till mine shows up so I can do a before and after test to see if it matters. |

I just ordered the two piece free float rail that midwest industries makes. Just have to cut your delta ring off and it drops right in. It goes all the way to the receiver for that special monolithic look, I love that.
$204.75 shipped for the midlength. Not sure if you are wanting it for midlength or carbine but I think they make it for both.http://www.bravocompanyusa.com/Midwest-Industries-MCTAR-21-p/mctar-21.htm |

So no one's said why UTG isn't good. (?)
I looked at them today at Military Gun Supply, and they look solid ... allen head screws up both sides for a tight fit and the two pieces fit together so seamlessly I played hell finding the damn seams! Also, some nice rail covers so that picatinny doesn't eat up your hands and/or sandbags. Is there some genuine reason not to use them, or is it just because they're relatively cheap? . . |

Here's my approach OP. I put a YHM non FF on my CAR but haven't shot it enough to
know what it'll do. Once I get serious and find how accurate it is and if it's acceptable, say 1"-5 @ 100, I'll leave it on and go worry about something else. If it's not, I'll log my group sizes and put on a YHM FF for the same price and see if FF's make a difference on a 16". In any event, both rails are no more than a single high $$ FF. Good luck Btw, I just got an email from Bravo Co. saying 16" M4 uppers are in stock but when I went to buy it they were "Sold Out", again. Looks like I need one of those trendy cell phones that I can check my email every few minutes if I'm ever going to land one

| I havn't shot a UTG but I have looked at them in person. They are huge. Very wide. I don't like that. I'm waiting for a YHM Diamond to get in stock. Its still pretty big but for 100 bucks monolitic free float I will try it. Used DD Omegas go for a little over 200 in the EE, I'm tempted to get one of those if I find it in time. |

People get hung up on price and seem to think if you're not spending $300 on a quad rail it's complete shit. The UTG's are perfectly functional. They're a bit larger than some of the more expensive ones. I have a set on the AR I keep in my car - why? Because they're cheap - they perform well for the money. There's nothing I've ever found wrong with them. Once you screw them together they are rock solid. You surely can't beat them for the money. I have Troys and YHM's on other guns which are also good choices, but I put the UTG's on that particular weapon in case someone stole my vehicle. I don't think you'll be dissatisfied with them for the money. But as always YMMV. |

what do you guys think of the surefire m-73 ? They're one of the best looking rails there are IMO, are skinny so when you put covers on them they aren't too big and people that have them love them. I was planning on getting one but couldn't justify at the last minute paying 200.00 for a non FF rail so I went with the YH for half the price. |
