i just purchased a "Rock River" upper that was 10.5in with a fixed carry handle.  The only identifying marks I can find are "M1S" on the top of the barrel right in front of the FSP.  I figured that meant Model 1 Sales so I checked thier website and there 10 1/4 commando barrel looks alot like what i have.  Other then that the only identifying mark i can find is a keyhole right next to the carry handle on the reciever and a 1 stamped into the FSP. There are no marks anywhere else on the barrel at all.

anyone have any idea?  I stole this upper as far as what i paid for it, otherwise i would know a bit more about it before i bought it.  The barrel is chrome lined and he says 1/9 twist.

thats a model 1 upper.

did you get it on gunbroker?  There is another thread in here where a guy bought something he thought had a wilson barrel and ended up being a model 1.

no i bought it at a local store.  You are sure its a Model 1 upper?  It does look Exactly like the one called the commando on the websight and i paid a good bit less for it.  Are these uppers decent in quality or frowned upon?

they are frowned upon around here, but truthfully we all spend a lot on our rifles...sometimes too much.  Model 1 uppers come with ER shaw barrels and are not bad.  The weakness is in the BCG.  I would replace that if I were you and then test the rifle.  If it runs like a top for 500 rounds then I would say you can trust it.  Most would not pick a model 1 upper as a go to gun.

I am sure it is a Model 1 sales upper.

edit:  in addition, their uppers can be surprisingly accurate.  FWIW.

thanks for the info.  I did not get a BCG with it and only paid 290 bucks for the whole upper.  It is unfired and seems to be brand spankin new.  i am going to switch out the A2 style reciever for a flat top reciever in a couple of days so the only thing i will be using will be the barrel/gas system/ and FSP.  the upper will be suppressed with a gemtech m4-02.

i hope it runs well.  Should i contact the gun store to inform him it is not a rock river but a model 1 incase it doesnt run right?

chances are he knew what he sold you when he sold it to you...to me that makes him a piece of shit.  Check that your bore is concentric before blowing up the can, cannot remember any threads about model 1 and cans but who knows.  I always use the eye through the bore method followed by the cleaning rod...then hope and pray on the first shot.  I am sure there is a better method.  good luck.

how do i tell what bore this thing has?  On the model 1 site it says you can get it in .223 and 5.56 but i dont see any identifications other then that.  also explain a concentric bore to me, im not sure i know what that means.  thanks

edit: this sounds real dumb but im not sure its a chrome lined barrel.  i was in the army for 5 years and could see the chrome ring around the barrel at the muzle end and the chamber looked shiney.  maybe its because i have not cleaned it yet but this one doesnt look shiny at all?

Make sure it all lines up or you will have a blown up suppressor. Thats what he was getting at from the way I read it.

there are a couple threads here about threads being concentric to the bore.  If the threads are not, and you put your can on and fire away the can will likely be ruined by a baffle strike or worse will blow up and could hurt somebody.

My remarks above are in reference to my redneck engineering way to check when I put my can on a new barrel.  Basically I put it on, look down the barrel to see if it looks good, run a cleaning rod through the barrel out the can to make sure it doesn't hit anything, then hope and pray on the first shot.

Model 1 sells both .223 and 5.56 barrels, some chrome some not.  If I were you I would take it to a gunsmith and find out what you have exactly.

yes, rereading it i can see how it was confusing...figured he had played with cans before.

i have both 5.56 and 223 ammo sitting here...is there any way i can put either of them in the chamber and see if they both fit? First i need to identify if it is chrome lined or not because if it is they only offer 5.56 chambers... i definately will have to make sure the can is lined up with the barrel and planned to run a cleaning rod through there from the barrel side first just to see if it hangs up on anything...i wonder if there is any more precise way of doing this that a average gun ability guy can do at home?

and this is my first can that I will own.  all the others have been attached and shot before i got to them while i was serving in iraq.

Lemme guess. You bought a "RRA" upper that is really a M1S upper from Flat Creek Range on Olympia Dr. in southside Lafayette? If so I'll tell you that those guys are crooks & are being investigated by our favorite beer, chew & firecracker agency at the top level for more serious offenses than their dishonest business practices. They sell M1S kits & pass them off as other major manufacturers gear to the unknowing. Sprint away from those a..holes. If you didn't purchase there then disregard this message.
