Where can i get a reasonably priced 22 upper kit? I was thinking of getting the CMMG or Spike's conversion but I have a extra stripped lower and thought I would get a dedicated .22 AR.

Ive been thinking about this myself.

Not sure whether to buy a 22 kit or get a dedicated upper.

Well depends if you really want a barrel that has the correct twist ratio. M1S ($475 for the CAR model) is probably the cheapest then Spikes ($600) for a true dedicated .22LR barrel.

I bought a Colt C/L 20" govt profile 1:12 bbl for $125, A2 upper for $65, handguards and CH for $30. A gas tube is optional but I got one anyway ($10) since I can still shoot 55gr pills out of it.

Total cost for my upper $230. I had already have a Ceiner kit that i bought for 170. So for a complete .22LR upper ~ $400.

ETA: This was all pre-election, with the exception of the A2 upper. I posted WTB adds in the EE and surfed the used AR parts section like a shark for several weeks. There are still good deals out there, you just have to hunt for them. If you don't have the patience to surf the EE for weeks and post WTB ads your best bet is to order a dedicated upper from a vendor an wait for it. Spikes is 6 - 8 weeks. I have no idea what M1S's wait is.

ETA 2: You might call M1S and ask if they have any of their .22lr barrels in stock. Looks like they are selling for $180.

You might want to bear in mind that the release of the Smith and Wesson MP15-22 and the Umarex/Colt dedicated 22 lr AR'ish rifles will likely be out by summer.

As for uppers, there have been many good reviews of the Spikes upper though I would like to see what's up with the accuracy numbers (2-3 inch groups at 25 yards?  Hopefully I misunderstood what I read).

EDIT: Here is the article.  It was 2.03" to 2.27" groups at 25 yards.   http://www.tacticalgunfan.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=354&Itemid=1  Seemed to be a pretty credible author.

Sweet Jesus! I hope those numbers are wrong....At 25yds I can tear a ragged 1 to 1 1/2" hole with my 1:7 twist CMMG SST barrel and my Ciener kit.

Here's a good DIY thread at the NM Forums.  You'll need to register and sign in, but it's worth it, IMHO.

FWIW; AFAIK; IMHO; YMMV; yadda, yadda, yadda.

I just bought a dedicated upper from a guy who is manufacturing a new style upper where the barrel is attached it's own receiver which fits inside of a milspec upper and uses standard AR float tubes or barrel nuts to hold the unit in the upper. This unit is supper accurate group a dime covers @ 50 yards. He is offering it in a military match config. or match style A3 upper with match chambered stainless barrel, free float tube. The bolt rides inside of its own receiver not riding inside the AR receiver it is basically a match rifle that works inside of an AR upper and works with AR lower and parts 10 round magazines and mag has bolt hold open on last shot. He is geared for accuracy and match style like compass lake and others but his is not based on the military conversion. This is a true dedicated upper and I have mine on a stag lower with standard trigger and using a mil spec carry handle sight and the accuracy is real good even just using federal Automatch ammo from walmart. I can imagine what one would get with match trigger and match sights or scopted. His starting prices for standard config is $995 but this is geared for match practice or someone wanting better accuracy from a .22 AR format. He is just starting to release this product and can add different accessories to his basic rifle. He does not have a web site up as of yet but his contact info is 706-537-0826 the unit is called the Wade .22 his name is James for those who might be interested. I am real happy with the one I have.
