this is my first post here, so please bear with me if i ask a n00bish question. A little background on me, i currently own a browning hi power 9mm. I want to get involved with idpa 3-gun matches, and plan on using either a mossberg 500/590 or a benelli m4 for the shotgun portion. for the rifle portion, i am most likely going to use an ar15.

that being said, I am considering doing an mk12 mod1 clone. starting with a stock ar15, what would i need to change/swap to make it a clone? i know i need a barrel/upper receiver swap, but looking at other clones built on this website, it seems like alot more than just the barrel/receiver need swapped. is there anybody out there who knows what i need to upgrade/swap for an mk12 mod1 clone?

another question for the idpa 3-gun experienced, would i be further ahead with an ar-15 and decent optics for the rifle portion, or would i see the advantage i expect to see by using an SPR?

you would need a low prifile gas block and free float rail. you can get spr barrels in mid, intermediate, and rifle length gas. if you use the low profile gas block you can add backup sight and an optic.

a real mk12 upper was just sold on the ee.

Here's a photo of SEAL Matthew Axelson ( real hero, Navy Cross), who was killed in an operation in Afghanistan. He is holding a Mark 12, Mod 1. From my research, to have a true clone of the military model you would need
SPR 18" stainless barrel
Upper receiver and BCG
Knight's Armament free float rails.
KAC low profile gas block
OPS inc muzzle break and collar
KAC two stage trigger
KAC front and rear backup sights
An optic like the Leupold Mark 4, MR/T 3x9x36

ok another question. should i be looking for an mk12/spr specific bolt carrier group? i was reading on m4carbine.net and alot of the people there are listing colt m4 bcg's in their upgrade list for their mod1.

also, i'm having trouble locating an spr upper receiver outside of the EE and other forum classifieds. i'd assume, given the popularity of the clone/build, that the spr receiver would be available through conventional channels. i've located the rest of the components, and am going with a nightforce 2.5-10x24 for optics, if the budget permits. lol.

I think any good bolt carrier group would do, like an LMT. There is no specialized SPR receiver as far as I know. It's the same flattop receiver used on the M4. You can use a Colt upper and Bolt carrier group but they'll cost you twice as much.

Does anybody know if that's an A1 or A2 stock?  On the picture above?

I posted the pic on another thread. Consensus seems to be it's an A1 stock

Using a Mark 12 for three-gun is a bit too much rifle. It's longer and heavier than what you are going to want. Go to some three-gun matches, and you'll see much lighter, faster-handling carbines.

Wiseguy, you're now a FORMER paid Colt carrier?

Yeah, I'll thread-jack a bit. I don't get paid for lugging a Colt product and other assorted luggage across the landscape any more, but I haven't thought of anything else really clever to put there yet. I final-outed on the 31st and signed out on terminal leave on the 5th.

My personal AR is a Rock River with Adco modifications.

To the OP, to get this back on track, I wouldn't even use my personal rifle for serious competitive three-gun since I have a 16" SPR-weight barrel, Adco's Mini-Mark 12 package. It's front-end heavy. I LIKE it that way, but the serious guys all have little 16" pencil barrels with huge-ass recoil compensating muzzle brakes that no "tactical" guy would want since they make your 5.56 sound like a 7.62. They're trying to shave a tenth of a second here, a tenth of a second there so they don't want to fight a heavier barrel.

i'm not looking to be the best guy. i just want to have fun. so i should use something more along the lines of a standard ar? i'm not going to be serious enough to have a dedicated competition rifle. i would like to use the same rifle i have outfitted for every day usage. i'm serious enough about owning that i'm going to have an mk12 mod1 clone as well as a standard AR outfitted to my tactical liking. but you have answered my question in that the spr would not be a good rifle for a 3-gun.

out of curiosity, what rifle would you suggest for a semi-serious 3-gun competitor?
