| I have an older 7.62 x 39 Colt Sporter. The upper has a non-removable carry handle. I don't care for the carry handle and want to switch the receiver to a flat top. Is a .223 receiver compatible with the 7.62 x 39 barrel, bolt, etc. Thanks |

Switch away. It's true that certain Colt made uppers have been 7.62x39 marked in the past, but that's a totally meaningless marking. Now if you're planning to use a Colt clamp on sight assy w/your flat top 7.62, Colt does make one w/an elevation wheel marked other than the .223 range markings. Beyond that slight difference, there is no difference between the 5.56/7.62 uppers. Only the barrel and bolt head are different. |

The upper receiver (the forging, the actual upper receiver) IS THE SAME.
WoodChuckDad must not be understanding what you're asking. The only difference between the 7.62x39 complete upper assembly is the bolt (the carrier is interchangeable), and the barrel obviously. |
| The uppers are not all the same. Some newer flat tops will have feed ramps cut in them that most likely the older barrel does not have. The feed ramp cut uppers may cause a feeding problem with the barrel if it does not have the ramps that match that style upper cut in the barrel extension. |

Plus thats not a general dimensional issue. Thats some could some cant. The recievers are the same, just buy a flattop and switchem. |

Actually I understood the question but was just dead wrong in my answer. I thought the bcg was a different length. Live and learn. |

Just trying to give the guy a heads up on the differences which are real and could cause feeding problems. Why would anyone want to dremel something when you could be informed and make the correct purchase from the start. |
