So what is the consensus of how much is too much?  My rear A2 sight is adjusted so that it is only about 14 clicks from being totally adjusted to the side.  From looking down on it, I would guess it is about 3/4 of the way to one side.

Is this something that only the OCD types would worry about fixing?  Or would the hive mind think that the front sight needed to be bent or the locator notch be filed to bring it back into the center for sight adjustment.

It is an older barrel so I can't return it and the feed ramps line up so I am positive it is the front sight base being canted.

Bump.

Anybody?

Does the adjustment put the rounds where you want them? If so, personally I wouldn't worry about it especially if it's an older gun.

Agree. If it's throwing rounds on-target and you've still got 14 clicks of adjustment left to the short side, you are good to go!

It is sending rounds where I want them to go.  Thank you for the help.

Bushmaster?

They were known to have this affliction for a while is why I ask.

a member here offered:

properly clamp the upper in a vise.
remove handguards and gas tube
with a barrel wrench, loosen the barrel nut
if the barrel has any rotational play, buy a new upper receiver.
install barrel in new receiver, making sure the index pin fits tight in the receiver.
tighten barrel nut, install gas tube, install handguards.

You could simply square the existing set-up of course, or as some have suggested, use a rubber mallet and whack the FSB until square.

Use of the ARCHIVE search yields scores of similar questions to yours and the 'fix' recommended is pretty much the same. Either a canted FSB fix, (the barrel needs to be properly indexed).

Troubleshooting forum used to have this highlighted or tacked. You may want to check there too

I would amend the above with:
Since you didn't say which direction the rear sight was off, I will assume it is to the right.

Somebody verify that I didn't get my right and left confused during this exercise...

properly clamp the upper in a vise.
Sight along the top to determine, if you can, which direction the front sight is canted (should be to the left in the above example when looking from the rear.
remove the handguards.
With a barrel wrench, loosen the barrel nut
if the barrel has any rotational play, see if you can adjust the cant that hopefully you were able to observe earlier.  If none determined, cant the front sight in the direction that would overcome your rear sight shift (front site moves opposite to bullet impact, so in the above example you would move it right).  Shim the slot with something to keep the barrel nut from rotating the barrel back to wrong way. This should only matter if the barrel indexed counterclockwise (looking from the muzzle), as the nut will probably drag it back clockwise until the pin hits the other side of the indexing slot.
Reinstall barrel in receiver.
tighten barrel nut, install handguards.

The pin may be tight in the slot, in which case you may have to open up the slot with a file in the direction you want to rotate the barrel.

Of course if the front site is a clamp on or setscrew, ignore the above and adjust the sightbase!
