Think of sleeper cars, like an old-school pinto or vega that's build underneath for performance.
Well, I want to build a sleeper carbine - with reliability, and maybe accuracy, in mind. So, what's the WORST AR brand whose lower still will function reliabily - i.e. drop-free mags and fit good parts, etc? I was thinking I'd put a plain colt lightweight upper, with flat-top, on it, and maybe the cheapest crappiest, but functional, stock. For sure, cheap fore-grips. Grand finale, maybe some home-camo - not sure about this. Recommendations? Advice? ETA: added bonus is that the thing will be unlikely to be stolen by any internet commandos or armchair cowboys! |

I built an A1 a few years ago with the concept of 'steath' accuracy in mind.
It had a 20" 1/7 heavy barrel that I turned down to fit the A1 gas block. Foreward of the block it looked like any other A1 pencil barrel. A1 looks with the accuracy of a H-Bar. Sure has pissed off a few people who say an A1 cannot handle heavy loads. |
| For a truly cheap and ugly look I would use an old cast lower from DPMS, Superior, or Oly. I've thought about doing something similar, but like the previous poster my goal would be absolute accuracy. I would build it around a Mike Rock 5R barrel turned down to a light weight profile under a set of carbine or midlength handguards mounted to a shortened "service rifle" float tube. |

Agreed...I'm interested in why you want to build this sleeper. Just to piss of the top shelf snobs? |

Just get a DPMS lower receiver wit a good trigger, mis-match colored upper receiver, commercial M4 stock like a Tapco, and use a good barrel/BCG combo. Then install a DCM free float system (looks like standard HGs), then a quality sighting system. That sounds like a winning combo right there. I think that this is a great concept. Kinda like Eddy Van Halens guitar back in the day. Beat up ugly looking with a home grown paint job and a bunch of tape all around it but with KILLER sound. |

Here's how I'd do it.
Parts for looks: Decent lower - Bushmaster, Stag, RRA, etc. Decent upper - Bushmaster, Stag, RRA, etc. Plain Jane furniture - A2 grip, M4 stock, black plastic handguards Good LPK - Bushmaster, Stag, RRA, WOA, etc. Standard FSB Parts for performance: Good barrel - WOA, Noveske, Denny's Operator, etc. Upgraded trigger - Geissele, JP, etc. Good BCG - LaRue, BCM, LMT, etc. I wouldn't sacrifice reliability with any shitty parts. It's hard to tell what most are anyway. I'd get the barrel Duracoated if it's stainless. You could give the rifle a Krylon camo job to give it more of a beater look. |
