wasnt LWRC involved in this testing as well?   does that mean they are out?  basically colt, FN, and HK got awarded the money?  or this means these 3 will be going to next phase of testing?

I'll quote what Mr. Brett from FN said in another forum

No one "Won" as of yet. This first phase was a series of GO / NO-GO criteria. Out of this event, many things were looked at and tested after the G/NG. The Operational type test will take place in Early-Mid 09 to have the final contract awarded (keep in mind they can still award multiple contracts).

That looks to be the case. The FN IAR has a unique feature where it switches from closed to open bolt automatically depending on the temperature. Anyone have further info on that?

LWRC was the only ones publicly pushing the closed/open bolt AR platform. not a surprise if FN did, I had also heard that colt filed for a patent on similure features.

Being cut out of the competition at this stage would seem to be a big blow to them and POF USA which I believe also had a submission. I wonder if they will protest? If so it may set the whole process back a while. Past Performance can be a mother to over come if you don't have any.....

Of note is that Colt had a split award. Was this for the DI and a piston variant?

Was the H&K a 416 variant

From FNH-USA:
The FN IAR is based on the SCAR. It has a rate of fire of 650 RPM and weights in at 10.4 lbs.
Today FN offers the new Infantry Automatic Rifle (IAR), a unique, highly-adaptable, modular selective fire weapon system that fills the roles of both individual battle rifle and squad automatic weapon in one light, compact package. The magazine-fed FN IAR is capable of firing from a closed bolt in both semi-automatic and fully-automatic modes, yet automatically transitions into open-bolt operation in semi-automatic or fully-automatic before reaching cook-off temperature for a chambered cartridge.

This will most likely result in the "big winner" being anounced after the next round.

Per DoD Announcement of 12/19/2008.  LINK.  Looks like Colt provided an alternate proposal along with their compliant proposal and both were accepted.

Its replacing the 249? I thought one of the advantages of the SAW was to put LOTS of rounds downrange, not just 30. I didn't read the whole article but will a larger magazine be included?
