I apologize if this is a rather stupid question, but I was far to young at the time, and knew little to nothing about firearms, to remember the first AWB. During that ban, what exactly was banned? Was it everything that had to do with the AW, or was it just the lowers of the weapons?

The reason I ask is because I would eventually like to get a new upper in a larger caliber for my AR. Unfortunately, financial restraints won't be letting me do that for a long period of time. I've always been a fan of studying the past to look to the future.

Could you purchase uppers during the previous AWB? Or was everything banned, except stuff like furniture, magazines, and parts of the like?

Thanks

The Ban specifically banned semi-auto rifles that more than 2 "evil features"

The evil featured included a detachable magazine, pistol grip, flash hider, bayonet lug, folding/collapsible stocks, and some other trivial things I'm probably forgetting.
For an AR, having a pistol grip and detachable magazine took up the two "evil" features it could have and still be legally produced.

You could get "post ban" uppers all day long, just w/o a bayonet lug or flash hider. For a price.

AWB is still active in NY, so for you the laws are no different now then during the federal AWB. Then and now you can still buy new uppers and lowers but they have to be ban compliant meaning no collapsible stock, threaded barrel, or bayonet lug.

New magazines of over 10 round capacity were also banned. Still were plenty around though.
