First post guys,

What inhibits installation of a FF hand guard when a pinned flash hider is installed? Is it the front sight not being removed or the FF handguard and/or new barrel nut not slipping over the OD of the flash hider?

Thanks a bunch!

It's the front sight base. You need to be able to slide it off to get the rail on. FH's aren't an issue at all.

ETA- with the obvious exception of keeping the FSB from sliding off properly.

As mentioned, it's your front sight base.  I think you'll need to cut off the front sight base, or cut it down to just the gas block  to get most free floats mounted on a barrel with a pinned flashider, than replace the front site with one of the clamp on style models, like a YHM or PRI.  I've got both YHM and PRI clamp on flip front sights, they work well for me.  I did have one upper for a while that had a free float on a barrel with pinned flashhider, but it was built that way, and the free float was an MI model.

Thanks guys!

Why do I read in different places that FF rails such as DD cannot be installed "with permanant flash hiders"?

Even if the front sight could not be slid off over the FH it could be carefully cut off and a different low profile gas block installed.

I don't understand but want to.

Thanks again,

Like said before the front site is the problem. You can cut it off, I did with a dremal and a couple minutes, all the other parts will slip right off after the fsb is gone.

Now the flash hider is no problem with the install of the rail itself.

The problem is now putting a new gas block on. I wanted a low profile block so I could put a 12" rail on a carbine gas system. Most gas blocks slide on and do not fit over the flash hider.

After some searching the only lo-pro gas block i found that would fit over the flash hider was made by yankee hill. It is a 2 piece gas block that bolts on.

Here's a link, I got the specter gas block. 6th one down

Or you can just not worry about it and get an MI, Troy, or DD Omega free float rail and not need to remove the FSB at all.
