A2 upper forces you to place optics on the carry handle. An A3 upper allows you more options to place optics & a buis lower on the flat top or a detachable carry handle if that's what you're into.

The A2 upper is more functional as a carry handle. The detachable carry handle on the A3 upper is very difficult to use because the opening is not large enough to put your fingers/hand through comfortabily. I have an A3 upper on my stag right now and I like it, however I have been desiring a A2 upper 20" rifle, b/c I think it looks cooler but thats just me.

I like the A3's just b/c you can easily throw optics on them.  Also the parts being modular if you bend or break something on you carry handle it's a drop in replacement as apposed to tearing everything apart and rebuilding your upper.

I'll play devil's advocate here.  An A2 is going to work better if you want iron sights.  It's going to be more secure.  You don't have to worry about iron sights working loose or coming off.  It's also probably going to give you more adjustment for range than the BUIS I've seen.

An A3 is going to be better if you want optics & see the iron as a backup.  You're the one who has to decide if you want an AR w/ iron sights, an optically sighted AR, or an AR w/ optics & BUIS.  An A3 is better for the last two roles, but an A2 is better for the first.
