My friend wants to take a 20" barrel and move the front sight back, put carbine handgaurds and a carbine gas tube on it, but before he does he wants to see a pic, anyone got some pics?

Let me know if this is even possible.

I imagine it would be a lot of work & probably pretty costly, since you would have to plug the old gas tube hole & have a new one drilled.

But why in the hell would you (your friend, whoever) wanna do that?! What benefits would you get out of it?

I doubt you'll get any pictures of a set up like that, cause it seems like a pretty stupid idea IMO.

I have no pics of this setup and doubt if anyone else does.

I would simply like to hear the reasoning for your (or his) desire to have a shortened sight radius without the weight loss and increased maneuverability of a shortened barrel.

I think its a stupid idea myself, I'll tell him that its not possible. I would never do anything like that, Why did he want to do this, I don't know.

How is he going to deal with the gas port - at rifle length?

I don't think he thought about that.

A 20" barrel with a carbine length gas port would allow the bolt start moving before the bullet leaves the barrel.  This would be horrible for accuracy and potentially dangerous . . .

I can imagine all kinds of problems with that setup. Why not get a 16" barrel and add a 4.5" - 5" compensator like they do to the short barrels? You will need the pressure to dissipate at the correct level by the time the action opens to ensure proper operation of the system and the modification you are talking about would probably defeat the timing to safely unlock the bolt.
