I already got 2 SHTF guns, and looking to buy or build a SASS.  Need help with decision, I've looked at the AR-10, Noveske N6 21", Larue OSR, cant quite decide, or Maybe just building the thing.  Any feedback will help.

Good idea thought it about it my self until I started to price it.
American spirt arms makes a .308 type AR that looks nice as
well.

if i were you, i would buy the DPMS LR/T SASS. i am building my own because i can't buy it here and also i want to shot it out to 1000 yards so i am going with a 22" barrel. GAP is building my upper and i build up a fulton armory lower.

I have an Armalite Super SASS and I love it.  Not sure what your intended use for your SASS will be... but I am able to hit a 10x10 plate consistently at around 600 yds with mine. I havent had a chance to shoot at any longer distances with it yet but would like to see what it is capable of.

Started as an Armalite carbine, decided to change things around a little and I haven't looked back since. Built it myself just the way I wanted it, 18" Noveske, 12" DD lite rail, Ops Inc. 12th model, and 5.5-22x50 Nightforce. No problems out to 800 yards.

Edit: Spent some time with the 800 yard plate again, very happy with the results.

I thought the DD lite rail was for Ar15 only and another one was made for the AR10  (looks different to me)....the one you have I like better, but which model is it?  It fits ar10?

Wow that is a nice looking rifle. How long is that suppressor on it and how long is the barrel?

Thanks, the suppressor is 11" long and the barrel is 18" long. The suppressor covers 2.5" of the barrel.

Cost more than my first car, alot more. Thanks.

I'm new to the AR world and I was wondering what it takes to make an AR style .308 very accurate, other than a barrel change? Is there something that is done to the bolt, carrier or something else to improve accuracy? The reason I ask is b/c I'm supposed to buy a DPMS LR308 AP4 off of a co-worker for a DAMN good price and I was wanting to make it a longer range rifle.

Any good places to buy a barrel where they are available?

I'd stay away from American Spirit if I were you and either build it up on an Armalite or a DPMS. I wouldn't get the DPMS SASS either, it looks like it belongs on the cover of a Tapco catalog. Get either a DPMS LR308 on an A3 reciever or an Armalite and go from there. My first choice would be to have one built up my GA Precision though. Mine is factory and will shoot submoa out to 500 yards, that's as far as I have shot it on paper.

is this one ^^^ with the E1 an armalite or dpms reciever?  I ask because I may want to start a build with GA precision and dont really know which I should choose.  No clue which is better.  Also I know no one really can answer this and its been worn out already....but if the wait for a GAP is 6-8 months how likely will it be that i dont get the rifle I ordered due to a ban or whatever?  Wont it take a while to pass something like that?
12/11/2008 7:56:16 PM EDT
[#13]
That is an Armalite with the E1 rail. Better? I think they are both about even. Pluses for the DPMS is cheaper mags when they are available and more companies that come out with .308 ARs are using this mag. Pluses for the Armalite is there are more accessories for them and you can use converted M14 mags for them. The Armalite has Gen II mags which are on par with DPMS mags as far as reliability goes but all I have are Gen I mags and I have never had a problem with them. Armalite's recievers are forged and therefore are slightly stronger than DPMS but this is almost a non issue. Best? Go with which ever you can find. I like Armalite better though...

Another option to consider would be the JP Enterprise LRP-07.

This will be my next rifle and I will get it knowing that I will never regret my purchase since I am getting the best (for not a whole lot more).  I've thought about the Knight Armament (Although I've never shot one, but now you are talking really big $$$.)

I have the JP CTR-02 and the quality is superb!

Yeah, this is the 10T and they come with 24 inch match grade barrels. I stopped at 22 inches because I want to be able to get to 1K with no problem. There is a 1K range about an hour from me that I plan to join this spring...

Mine is a 20" medium weight from Armalite...nothing fancy but still does .5 MOA when I do my part.

So for 1000 yard shooting a 20 inch will not do?  How much more drop will a 20 or 18 inch shoot?  If 22 is the sweet spot for a rifle such as this I may go with that.  Is that the case?  I know longer barrel = more velocity but really what is the difference?  Does 4 extra inches really affect handleablility that much?

I've only been out to 900 yards with my 20" but with my rifle zeroed at 200 yard and a 155 AMAX factory load, I have to adjust for 277" of drop at 900 yards...that's a lot of clicks.

Based on the chart I made I'd have to go a total of 376" at 1000 yards but I havn't been able to verify this.  Not sure about terminal performance at this range but it sure is fun to shoot.

My 20 inch with the can.  Started life as a plain jane A4 with a stainless steel barrel.  Still has SS barrel, just blackened:

My 24 inch T with the can.  This is the Eagle Arms chrome moly heavy barrel.  Very accurate:

All ArmaLite or Eagle Arms parts on both rifles except the PRS on each one and the can.

I have only gotten to shoot the 24 inch out to 500 yards and was hitting COM on a torso silouhette on a very windy day using surplus M118LR.

that 20 inch looks a helluva lot more maneuverable than the 24....I think I will go with that for my SASS project.   If you guys had to do it all over again and pick one length barrel for a WSHTF rifle what would it be?  I am stuck between 18, 20, and 22 and the rifle will definitely be suppressed.  Kinda leaning towards 20 but the rifle has to maintain some degree of portability in case buildings have to be entered.  Who knows maybe 18 is better.  I guess it is a hard decision finding the balance between effective range/portability

Well, the military SASS is a 20 inch.  However, if you want to really reach out to say 1000 yards, I think you need the 24.  20 is good to at least 800 and might reach 1000, but to be consistent, I would go with the 24 IF that's the kind of distance you might want to shoot.

Also, when I went to this range out in Texas, near Waco, the owner won't let you shoot anything lighter than 175gr.  He says the lighter stuff won't stay supersonic out to that distance.

Some people say 18 inches is the optimum for a .308/7.62x51 AR, but that kinda limits you to 600 or so.  It's up to you.

Now, if entering buildings, etc is a concern and you aren't worried about anything over 500, just get an A4 carbine:
