I am currenly in the process of building a new upper with a 16" Noveske barrel. I am trying to decide between a mid length VIS and a rifle length VIS. Which do you prefer and why?

Mid for a 16", you need the dwell time for reliable operation no matter the conditions.

for a 16" long barrel you need either a carbine length or a mid length gas system.  a rifle length gas system will not work.  for instance a bushy disapator has a carbine gas system hidden under a rifle fore stock.

A 16" with a tuned (appropriately opened-up gas port) full length gas system works just fine...it's just not ideal.  I've heard of problems with low powered ammo or cold weather, but haven't had an issue myself.

Go mid, if you can.  Carbine is best for shorter barrels.

i like rifle length then mid length over carbine for the sight radius when shooting with irons.

uh, perfectscore isn't asking about the gas system.

Vltor VIS is an upper receiver... VIS 1, VIS2 VIS 3..

I would go with a mid length VIS 2...

DOH!  You're right.

In that case I'm a big fan of rifle (12") length free float rails over the carbine barrels.

I'm going to go against the trend here and assume you're asking what length of the actual VIS rail to go with.  I'd go rifle length if saving weight is not the issue.   More space for gear if needed.  Longer sight radius = better hits at distance.

Sorry, I probably didn't make myself clear. I meant to say between a VLTR receiver and VIS-2, mid length hand guard, and a VLTR receiver and a VIS-3, rifle length, hand guard. I would appreciate any preferences and/or suggestions.

Some of you hit right on the button. Thanks. I am beginning to think it is more a matter of looks. The difference in length appears to be about 4".

I'm having two 6.8 Recons built right now, and I went with the VIS-3 instead of the VIS-2A. I wanted a 12" rail so I could mount my bipod further out. If you plan on carrying your AR, go with the shorter VIS for weight reasons. If you plan on shooting from a fixed position, weight doesn't really matter.

ETA: It's less than a 4" difference, the VIS-2 is 9", the VIS-2A is 10" and the VIS-3 is a 12"

I entirely agree with you. The VIS-3 is more practical and versatile. I have decided to go with that length. Thanks to all.
