I have a fresh (lonely) RRA receiver sitting here wondering what it will be when it grows up.  I have a few idea's, but one is go build a precision rifle but cloning what our armed forced are using.  I immediately found the Mk12 Mod 1 and recently ran across the SAM-R rifle.

I don't plan on getting a suppressor.  So with that in mind, what is the main difference between the two platforms?  Is one superior to the other?   Is one significantly cheaper to correctly reproduce?  Where would be the best place to buy the upper/bolt group?  I would get the optics later.

PS.  My clone doesn't have to be 100% correct but I do want to get relatively close such as using the same barrel profile, twist rate, material, handguards, etc.

So what are you going to get if it isn't a 5.56/.223? You'll have a hard time matching parts up in a different caliber. Go to ADCO for all your Mk12 clone needs. Or build your own interpretation like I and many others have done.

Sorry, I edited the original post.  I don't plan on getting a suppressor for this platform and it will be a 5.56 rifle shooting 75 or 77gr ammo.

If you want a clone of the Mk12, ADCO makes a great looking clone that is pretty damn close to the original. It's not cheap, but it is pretty awesome looking. He also  makes a SDM-R upper as well. It's really up to you which one you want, but ADCO is definitely the place to go.

If I remember correctly, the Mk12 SPR is designed as a sniper style rifle, made to hit out to 600 yds very accurately. The SDM-R is a squad level weapon, where shots to 600 yds aren't very common, but it's very accurate and fast shooting inside 400 yds using an ACOG instead of a scope.

The SAM-R is the USMC Squad Advanced Marksman Rifle, designed for hits up to 800 yards, using the Leupold 3x9 scope. Here's one I put together for about $3000 including the optic.

Is there a difference between the SDM-R and the SAM-R?  I know the SAM-R has a 20" barrel while the Mk12 Mod 1 has an 18".  Other than the profile of the barrel, any differences in the trigger or bolt?

Jcrowl, that is a nice looking piece!  Did you assemble the upper yourself or buy it complete?  What barrel and trigger are you using?

i was under the impression that the SAM-R used the KAC flip up gas block/front sight

I bought the rails, BCGs and uppers and had Compass Lake install the barrels and put 'em together. The SAM-R has a Krieger  stainless match barrel with 1/7 and 7eighths twist, The SDM-R has a Douglas stainless match barrel with 1/8 twist, with 12 flutes under the handguard. The SDMR has a regular A2 FSB, with set screws. My SAM-R has a Geissele DMR trigger and the SDM-R a Geissele match trigger. They really do break like a glass rod.
Here's my SDM-R

You are correct. At the time I built it last year and maybe even today the KAC is hard to find in the civilian market so I went with a PRI gas block

I'd like to see that rifle with the new ARMS flip up front sight (switch out that PRI).  With it collapsed, I'd bet it would look close enough to the KAC one (for a boat load less $).  Heck you could buy a new Geissele for the difference.

I perfer the 18" SPR over the SAM-R. The velocity gain you get from going from a 18" bbl to a 20" is so small something like 30-50 fps.

Why do you prefer the SPR?
