I know there are several similar threads wondering what AR15 to purchase quickly before the dems make too many changes. However, I thought I should start my own instead of hijack someone else's thread. So, please bear with me......

I am new to the whole AR-15 world. So far, I only have 5 hand guns.

I have wanted a AR-15 for the longest time and now with the recent election I feel the time is now. However, I unfortunately do not feel I have enough knowledge to do a custom build. So, what kind of AR-15 should I get and from where?

I would like to spend $1000 or less on this. I will mainly be using it for target shooting. It would also be my SHTF rifle but my main focus is just target shooting etc.

I was thinking a Stag Model 1 which it looks like can be had for around $910. Or, a RRA A2 for $900, or a RRA A4 for $860.

Is there an option I'm missing or that would be better? If you have a different model in mind please also link to a site that has it in stock so I could order it if I'm convinced it's a better option for me.  I'm not sure I can justify $1400 or I would probably get a Colt 6920.

So, please help a new guy find a production rifle before it gets too tough, (or expensive) to buy one.

Thanks!

Or, for a little less cash, you can't go wrong with a 6520 either.

bkrosco: Under $1000? Probably not going to happen now & when you factor in ammo, mags & any other accessories you may want/need you are going to be well above $1000. I feel sorry for fellow killers who did not stock up several months before the election. Just keep your brain housing group about you & do not panic like so many of our brothers are! Eventually you will find what you need but it's highly unlikely you will find it for under $1000 unless the market determines there is no immediate & serious threat of any negative gun legislation in the acute future.

Don't overlook Armalite M-15s.  They are simply amazing rifles!

Well, you can get a very high quality gun if you purchase the uppers and lowers seperatley. Get a good quality LMT or Bravo Co Upper, and get an inexpensive complete Stag lower, push the pins in and you've got a very nice rifle.

Actually, I was a bit of a dumbass for not doing that, I purchased a Stag Model 1 off the shelf, mostly because it had the proper "F" marked FSB for flattops, the bushy A3 I had didn't have that and it was a bitch to sight in. The stag is a good gun, however it doesn't have M4 feed ramps (ok I guess) and it doesn't use the Mil-Spec Barrel steel (but they use the mil-spec buffer tubes, WTF?). The lowers are more or less mil-spec, and inexpensive.

The issue is, get SOMETHING now, and if you find something later that you like more, then you can sell the other gun and get what you want. At least you'll HAVE an AR if you don't get a chance to get what you want.

I've owned two RRAs (a CAR A4 and a NM A4) and have nothing bad to say about them.  That goes the same for every other person I've ever met that has owned a RRA.  I admit that I don't have any real experience with other ARs, but in my humble opinion, RRAs are fantastic values for the money, and that would be my suggestion to you.

Under $1k, Stag model 1(or Model 2-a touch cheaper and comes with a decent BUIS, which you will probably evolve to by osmosis over a detachable carry handle anyway).  If you bump yourself to a $1300 budget then get the Colt.

ETA: Make sure any RRA you see in stock under $1000 actually has a chrome lined barrel, most likely it doesn't.   Non-chrome lined are easy to find, M4 profile CL barrel is another story.  Sorry, but I'm not that impressed with RRA after being so horny for it when I first started looking.

If you don't want to spend the money on the Colt then go with the LMT.  Buy the upper and lower separately to save a few bucks.

I have been impressed with RRA. I have two now. One is not chrome lined and of course no issues there. My light weight is chrome tho.

You guys (and my credit card company) will be happy to know that I decided to go with the Colt 6920. I ordered it today.

I don't plan on getting another AR for quite a while so I figured it was worth it.

Any thing I need to know about my new rifle?

Thanks.

Would this ammo work for my 6920?:
http://www.wideners.com/itemdetail.cfm?item_id=8695&dir=18|830|845

Sorry, I'm still confused on the whole .223 vs 5.56 thing. I believe my 6920 will be .223 so this ammo being 5.56 is NOT compatible, correct?

If that is the case, what ammo would work well for me?

Thanks.
