brand new to the AR world, so its very new to me.  dont have any previous experience owning one.  my question is this what platform/manufacturer would be better to go with for the base rifle in regards to parts availability/reliability/accuracy?  Optics and sights will come later, i'm more interested in the RIFLE.  And will i upset anyone when i say that I'm after something in at least a thirty cal.

Welcome to the forum. You probably want to look into the AR-10.

thanks, i have checked into the AR 10, wondering which company though(armalite, dpsm, etc).  if it helps looking to drop $3-4k total for everything when its done, i just can't drop it all at once :(  Are there any other platforms other than the AR that i should be considering?

The only other .308 I would consider is the Springfield M1A. Personally I'd rather have an AR-10.

which would be a better rifle to start a build, armalite, dpms, and rock river all seem to make good stuff.  i'm kinda leaning towards the armalite AR 10A4

Ive personally shot and seen one of these rifles with match ammo shoot cloverleaf groups. I think it was shooting around 1/3MOA.

what about parts availability/reliability? trying to plan ahead in case repair/replacement parts become hard to come by

The GAP rig ran 100%

As far as availability/reliablitity, no one can know for sure until a ban comes and what will be restricted. Right now they are pretty easy to come by online.

There are certain parts that are more likely to wear out and break first. You'll probably want a spare bolt carrier group (BCG) atleast for ban scenario.

thanks for the information, its a great start.  i'm not at all familiar with maintaining one of these rifles, or what parts may be prone to wear/breakage.
