Howdy!
So for my next AR I'd like to build a precision AR with the hopes of being accurate at 500 yards out. I'm a bit new to this and could be going with the wrong platform, but AR's are just too fun. I originally was looking at the Remington 700 but would rather trick out an AR-15. I think I'd like to stick to an AR-15 instead of a AR-10 at this point due to ammo, but I would like some long-range lethality. My question is, where's a good starting point for this? I have a middy that I want to be my primary go-to for targets within 100 yards. Can you give me some advice on what to research? I was originally looking at the SLR15 Grail but I don't know if that would be the best fit. I also don't mind building a rifle from parts. I'd like to mimic a SASS/Mark 11 Mod 0 look with a 20" or greater barrel. Thanks! |

if your just punching paper, then 5.56 will be ok,
if your hoping for something to die at that range, I would look to the larger 6.X calibers. or a .308. the little 77gr bullet doesn't have a ton of killing power out that far in my opinion. YMMV so maybe a 6.8 with a 1/11 twist in a 20" or longer barrel. or a 6.5 in a 1/9 twist in a 20" or longer barrel. free float your barrel and get a bipod and decent glass. the whole package minus ammo should run you less than $1500 |

A barrel longer than 18 inches won't really do anything, and don't mind the comments from people who want a bigger bullet for "more knockdown power." There is a reason that the MK12 exists.
One thing about "tricking out" a gun. I fucking hate that term. Get a gun with a 1:7 twist, shoot heavy bullets and you will be successful. The more modifications that you make, the les successful you will be, unless they are the right modifications, so try it for a while and then start building. |
