Guy at work has a colt hbar target match competion A2. we got to talkin yesterday and he was looking to swap his new hbar for a flattop. so I told him that I had a RRA varmit A4. He looked it up and said he would be interested in trading if I wanted to. My ? here is this. His Colt has about 10 rounds fired thru it and my RRA has 80 rounds thru it,so there both practically brand new. But being that I am a newbie at the black rifle thing was wandering if it would be a good trade. both are stock, no upgrades, except the RRA has a 2 stage trigger and hogue grip and winter trigger guard. I looked up the colt on gunbroker and it seems like they are selling for more than I paid for the RRA. Just wondering, Thanks |

Personally, I believe HBAR barrels suck for most things besides sitting behind a bench/stationary target shooting. Certain 3-gun usages aside, HBARs are a PITA to lug around and hold up for hours at a time. However, you can always get a different upper or a different profile barrel or even reprofile the barrel by sending it to ADCO... The trade idea would be a wash in my opinion as the HBAR barrel does not appeal to me, but that is just my tastes and how I use my AR's... It wouldn't be a bad trade as far as $$$ value is concerned, but will it suit your needs as a rifle in the way that you want to use the rifle? |

What are the details? What are the characteristics such as... Is this a preban or postban? Bayonet Lug if PreBan? Large or small pivot pin, Raised fence for takedown spring and detent or not, is the fense drilled? Large or small fire control pins? Does it have a sear block? What type of block (One side pin or 2-side pin) Is the receiver internals incompletely milled to act as a block? Condition? Original? I can't imagine a time when a trade of a RRA for a Colt would not be a good deal but if you have the wrong combination of a blue label with a large pivot and a sear block with large trigger pins it would amount to a gun that I would have zero interest in owning myself. Not that teh Colt would be worth less then the RRA, it is just a gun that would be a royal PITA to upgrade later although it can be done. JMHOs. I have an R6600 Colt AR-15A2 HBAR and it was my first AR-15 and I keep it but all the rest of my AR-15s are Bushmasters because I like standard spec features even though during the Ban years I owned many Colts along the way. My favorite Colts are a subset of the Match Target HBARs that had the small pivot with teh drilled fence. They still have the sear block so you need to consider if you want to run a 22 or 9mm conversion as both will require mods to the block but other then that they are sweet Colts. Still, they are nothing that my Bushmaster lowers can't do even though most of my uppers are COLT including my Bolt/Carrier groups! |
| thanks guys. I guess what I really should have asked is Would it be a fair trade or would I be getting the short end. Here's whats bad..I have a bad habit of buying guns and then not shooting them that much, and putting them in my safe, and I just can't bring myself to sell them....PITA...what does this mean? sorry guys told you I was a newbie to the black rifle. The post just above I have no clue what you are talking about...lol |
Colts were made with more strange combinations then anything you will ever try to understand. You really will not do bad with the deal but Colts are really best studied a little and decide what you want to do with it before buying. |
| I don't know much about the colt hbar and it sounds like you don't either. RRA makes a great rifle for the price, I say make a deal with your buddy to go out to the range together and fire off a couple of rounds of each others rifle before making any final decisions |

I used to suscribe to the notion that hbars suck, since that's all I had to shoot as a skinny highscool kid. My dad just told me to stop being a wimp and suck it up. Well, now that I've started shooting M1 garands more, I think hbars are excellent rifles. If you can't hold up an hbar, or carry it on a sling, you probably need to hit the gym. Plus, if you keep it stock, I bet it wouldn't weigh any more than the average M4 clone on this site. P.S. The HBAR I refer to is my dad's A2 20" preban colt, and while it's getting to the point of being shot out, it was an excellent gun when he started shooting it around the time I was born. |

Dude do the trade. Historically Colt's have held a higher value. A Target HBAR will be a tack driver. My assessment about HBAR barrel weight, same as recoil on my .300 Win. Mag., no big deal. My RRA Service Match AR weighs in over 15 lbs., but I love to shoot it. |

Seriously, different tools for different jobs. I have carbines and I have rifles and for short range or close quarters I would want a carbine but for longer distance or survival in a wooded or open area I would MUCH prefer a 20-inch rifle over a carbine. As for the Colt, this is most likely a small pivot and if you look at the right side of the receiver towards where the front pivot pin sits you are likely going to see a raised rib. On most of the guns of this model this rib will not be drilled BUT you can have a moderatly skilled machinist or gunsmith drill the required holes and you would be able to convert this to use a mil-spec style push pin instead of the 1-screw-headed pivot pin that I expect this has. Otherwise, this will have a sear block and it will use oversized trigger pins. This really is not a problem as the factory Colt trigger group is very good and if you want a match trigger Jewell makes a large pin unit that will work with the sear block. That is a great model and I owned at least one of those in the past and as with any Colt it will be a well made gun! I would jump at the chance for that trade! |

well after listening to all this I would be crazy not to go with the Colt. but the problem people keep telling me about Colt is the mismatching. Like I say I have a RRA and I have been looking at a 6.5 Grendel, 458 socom, and a 6.5 Creedmoor. with the Gendel and socom all I have to do is drop in and pin. the creedmoor....well you know...a whole new gun. So with all that I don't think I will be uh tradin. But many thanks for all the info guys I just hate being a newbie. If any of you have any Contender questions feel free to ask me thats all I have shot and done over the last 23 years. more barrels than I can count...lol |
