I have an Armalite collapsible stock on my AR-15.  The receiver extension is 1/2" shorter that the stock on the collapsed/closed position.  this is different thatn the RRA or Bushmaster stocks where the receiver extension is flush to the end of the stock when closed.

What is the story with the stock tube which is 1/2 "shorter than the stock?

Yeah, you should check to make sure the collapsible section is the same length.  If it is, maybe it's a mil-spec vs. Commercial tube issue
