I have a friend who wants a .223 semi auto but does not want open up his wallet.  He was thinking about buying a used Ruger Mini 14 for $500, but then he saw a ad for Century ARs for $600 dealer cost.

I told him about my bad luck with Ruger Mini 14/30s and Century build quality...but he really wants this AR.

What is the word on these? Their ad says built with some mil spec / Colt parts.

Olympic Plinker Plus $600/$615. Factory new with a guarantee. Important because I've dealt with Century customer service twice. On the flip side I've gotten lucky with a Century CETME but.....

$600 complete Stag M-4 kit from Legal Transfers + $ 100 lower = $700 for a nice chrome-lined M4 w/ BUIS.

Do it right the first time.

I would stay away from the Century AR's.  My local has a couple and neither of them are really clear as to what parts are Colt.  On both of the ones we looked at neither the upper or lower were Colt, the barrel wasn't Colt, the BCG wasn't Colt based on the carrier staking and one didn't even look like there was an attempt made to stake the key.  The fit of most of the parts was very sloppy compared to my Olympic lower/LMT upper M4 and one of the front sling swivels had so much lateral play that we both wondered wether it was even an AR swivel.  Also my local said they originally advertised them as Colt, not Colt parts and when my guy wanted to return them because they obviously weren't Colt he was told he would have to pay $80 per gun as a restocking fee.  The price doesn't justify the fact that, at least in the ones I saw, I have no idea which parts are Colt and which parts aren't.  JMHO

I bought one years ago during the ban period.  It is an OK rifle but as stated earler none of the parts are marked, not even the heavy barrel it came with.  I had to stake the bolt and the lower parts used were used GI in a NEW DPMS lower.  There was even some rust on certain parts.  I have since stripped the rifle and rebuilt it completely from the ground up using a Del-Ton kit.

I would pass and just buy a Del-Ton kit and a new $99 lower from a gun show and you will spend the same money without having a box of changed-out parts like I have.  I guess it is nice to have enough parts to build another rifle or as spares but it cost me in the long run.

I saw a Century AR at my local shop a few weeks ago for around $700. If I recall correctly, the finish had what looked like wire-wheel drag marks under it on the upper receiver. I was not impressed.

I've built AR's with good parts from the EE for less than $600 a time or two and have pride of building a good weapon and pride of ownership. I did everything by the book on my builds so I know it's right as it can be.

Is there an option for us ban state people? I can change it to an A2 stock. It is the flash hinders that I am worried about.

+1!  I wish I had more money so I could do this, but I've been buying up mags and another AK.

Another vote for passing on the Century AR.

I am new to the AR but come on- we live in the land of the AR! There are far superior choices for similar outlays as previous responses have indicated.
