Not sure where to put this tidbit.....so, mods, do your thing. Check out this article from Military.com. http://www.military.com/news/article/army-taps-industry-for-m4-replacement.html?col=1186032325324 |

Hot Even if the army replaces them - its gonna take a while to replace every one. And police/swat and civilians will still use them for many years. It will be interesting to see what happens though. |
|
If they find a replacement I think they will still keep the M4/M16 platform. They would probably switch the caliber and DI system to a piston system if anything. But then again, the Magpul Masada looks promising too, anyone heard of any down sides to the Masada? |

| Even if they did adopt something else, it really wouldn't matter. The general public will still be able to buy lower and upper receivers, barrels, and everything else to build their own AR-15's. It's not like everyone in the industry will stop producing AR parts. |
If it's a downside it's because they don't have a long background history in Design and Engineering of firearms. Companies like FN and H&K along with Colt and many others do have the long historys. But Magpul does have a really new and quality product so I hope they get a shot at it. |
| M-16/M-4 platform is still an open viable platform for improvement to keep up with the demands of the armed forces and the environments they are in. New blocks of M-4's can come out with piston driven systems replacing direct impingement systems that will allow the guns to run cleaner and cooler and chamber the M-4's in either the 6.5 or 6.8mm for enhanced knockdown power. I don't see the design going away anytime soon or in the near future. |

last paragraph says it all... "If that does happen, Soldiers -- and potentially their counterparts in the other services -- won't likely see their new carbines until 2012, after all the testing and evaluation is done. The Army currently has a requirement for 450,000 M4s, though that number could climb if the service decides to replace all M-16s with the smaller M4, Audette said." It will definately leave one day. but not anyday sooon... |

OK here is the nitty gritty, We hear about this every few years....the m-16 is going away and will be replaced here is why..... A Full Colonel is put in charge of weapon development and procurment. he has about 2 or 3 years in that position before he is moved onto something else. His job is to find a replacemtn for the current weapons sytem, so he finds the replacemnt of the year and begins to propose the replacment. He has no intention of replacing the system it is his job, he needs the good evaluation report, showing he did propse replacment programs, so he can get promoted. So every 2 or 3 years we get a new program some more ambitiuos than others. OWIC XM-8 H&K-416 just to name the last 3 Then add in the lobbying by other gunmakers trying to get the world's biggest contract and you will understand why we keep hearing this. |
