Does the .223 have enough power at 400-500 yards to effectively neutalize threats?  I assume that while it may be able to, the probability might be considerably lower.  What say you guys?

Very much so.

IIRC The effective range of a .223/5.56 is around 600 meters.

At the ranch, coyotes are a threat and I have no problem neutralizing them at 600 yards with .223. Now if the threat was an 400 lbs. black bear I might reconsider.

True, but I might reconsider .223 for a 400 lbs. black bear at 10 yards.

400 yards on a person would not be a problem.

Agreed, the target is important.  With match 77 grain ammo you should still have enough power to incapacitate/kill a human at that distance.

What game are you shooting at 500+ yards?

We have on a regular bases trained to shoot at the 500 meter target. We start at the 100 meter and work back 100 each time until we reach 500 meters.
