i was wondering, these MI free floats, say you just cut off your delta ring and then its an easy install. How do they work?

do they have pins that fit into the barrel nut to keep the rails aligned or what. im curious.

It is basically clamping to your barrel nut

I have one and it is rock solid

I would buy one again in a heartbeat

Glad to help.

The real thanks goes to Stickman.

The only thing that isn't painfully clear in Stickman's pictures is how the front handguard cap is held in place.  Is it the sleeve that's part of the bottom half that holds it in place?

The hand guard cap is held in place by the FSB. It sits between the FSB and a step up on the barrel.

Entirely incorrect. It's a free float tube. Nothing touches the barrel. The end cap has 4 button head screws that secure it to the end of the rail, you can see them in the last set of closeups.

The MI rails are nice. A tad heavier than the competition, IIRC, but definitely the best bang for you buck. YHM's are cheaper, but I feel they're far inferior in design and quality.

I see the button heads, but what about the original sheetmetal front handguard end cap?  I don't see anything touching it...  Pictures of the front would be helpful.

The hand guard end cap can be left on. It will not interfere with a thing.

Probably a little.

When I installed my MI FF rail, I pulled the FSB and removed the HG cap. If it’s left on it might rattle a little, but won’t hurt the FF function of the HG’s.

bushflyr Entirely incorrect.

Yes YOU are.

The hand guard cap at the muzzle end of the barrel is held in place by the FSB and is held against the step on the barrel by the FSB.

The hand guard cap does not need to be removed for the MI rails to be in place. They do not touch the cap. You may remove it if you wish, but you do not have to. The rails are designed to not touch the cap, but allow room for it. So if you remove the cap there will be a gap between the muzzle end of the rail and the FSB. This will be the same with other brands as well, to include the DD Omega which is a drop in FF option.

The cap should not rattle.

If there is enough space between the barrel “shelf” and the FSB, the HG cap will rattle. It might not give away your position during noise discipline, but it will be loose to some degree.

He was asking about the original handguard cap.

I have a FF MI rail on one of my mid-lengths and the handguard cap doesn't rattle at all. Take your handguards off and see if the cap moves or rattles. It might move a little rotationally but it shouldn't rattle if the FSB is snug against it.

The MI, Troy and DD two piece FF rails are designed to be installed with the cap still on. That's kind of the point of the easy installation. There is no need to remove the FSB unless you want to.

Oh, sorry bout that then. I understood him to be asking about the U-shaped piece supplied by MI. As in, "the cap that goes on the end of my new handguards." My bad.
