In regards to no parkerization under the FSB, anyone have an LMT that has rusted under the FSB?

I'm concerned about giving mine alot of extended outdoor use, rain, etc.

Anyone have any experience with this?

Thanks.

i have a colt that was made in 1992 and it ended out in the rain one time. There is surface rust under the FSB. I can tell because sometimes I can see it at the cracks.

I have a Bushmaster that isn't parkerized under the FSB and have no rust even though this rifle has been shot in the rain many times. I had the FSB off once and sprayed the barrel and fsb with Breakfree CLP just in case. You might try doing the same and spray around the area where the two meet as some will wick in.

In order for steel to oxidize (rust)...it needs two things.

Moisture
Oxygen

If oxygen can not get under the FSB along with the moisture, then it will not rust.

Even on rifles where the barrel has been parked under the FSB, the inside of the FSB where it slides over the barrel is not parked.  The holes drilled for the pins are not parked inside.  Something to think about.

If the park cant get in there then it will be hard for water to get in there. I parked my dad's bushmaster under the fsb and it I had to be careful not to scratch the bbl when putting the fsb back on. This is probably why some people just park them as a unit.

Ive pressed of sight bases from AK's that are 30 years old with unparked barrels under the sight base that have seen much more abuse then most AR users will subject there rifles to. And have never found any rust. I wouldnt worry about it.

I've had rust under there on a Bushy Gov't profile. I just cleaned it off, put some Tetra grease on the un-parked area, and reassembled. I'm really not worried about it.

I've had enough FSB's off that to me it is just a non-issue.  All I see under there, on unparked ones, is oil.
