I am looking at a couple of ARs from RRA and was wondering how their gas key was staked.  I wasn't able to look when I went to the gun store bc they had the upper/lower zip tied and wouldn't undo them. has
Thanks in advance.

I've heard varying reports on the quality of their staking.  It's a rather moot point as it can been done in a matter of moments with simple tools.  As to the feed ramps I can't help you, but if they're still extending them by hand (i.e. Dremel) they should just leave them alone.  Standard feedramps are just fine, but if you must have extended they're are other options.  Hopefully someone will come along and clear this up for you better than I can.

My staking was pretty much non-existant (replaced with a MPI'd BCG) and while the feedramps are not "M4" they are extended a little.

Ok thanks for the info.  How much is it to have the key staked or how do you do it yourself?

Thanks for the quick pics.  Looks like their staking is still a little light.  I am liking the Varmint more everytime I look and hold it.

Mine weren't staked even that well and the feed ramps look almost identical. The rest of it is very nice.

No that is a Colt competition HBar.  I have a RRA middy with a ss barrel bead blasted.  We use all our ars for yote hunting.  I have several buddies with the RRA varminters in different configurations.  They ALL shoot great.  Right now I am buiding another RRA.
BTW that's a bobcat laying in front of me.  Got it in our "backyard".

Yes please do.
The purpose for my rifle will be plinking and coyotes.
I am considering a build or the two RRAs mentioned.
If I go with  RRA I will get the 16" Varmint or the CAR 4 with the 1/8 twist stainless barrel.  I like the looks of both and the weight is within a pound of each other I think.
Decisions.

If you go ss I would get them bead blasted like I did so when your hunting they dont put off as bad of a glare.  Gotta go.   I'll post pics tonight.

Here is the whole gun(sorry pics arent the best).

Here is the Colt (20")

Here's a pic with some RRA varminters laying on the table with other ars

You probably couldnt tell too much from the last pic but there are a couple varminters in the mix.

That staking doesn't look like it's touching metal to metal on the hex screws. I would say that is not properly staked judging from the pics alone.

the metal on the key is up against the hex screws. must be the lighting in the pics.

this rra varmint gun is still a virgin. so we will see if everything holds up fine when i can spend the coin on the optic mount.

You really think that's properly staked? Just because a little metal was displaced don't make it staked.

BUKN I like the looks of the bead blasted stainless (thanks for the pic)
I figured I would go with the bead blasted but I was curious to how it looked.

Not to say your gun doesn't or hasn't performed up to your expectations CLICKBANGBANG. Sorry, but that ISN'T PROPERLY STAKED. This is closer to a "Proper Staking Job"

probably a stupid question and please ignore my inexperience...

What is the gas key, and what exactly is staking??

If one buys a rifle isn't properly staked, how would one properly correct it???

Staking is a safety measure designed to "stake" or affix the bolts/screws of the carrier gas key into place to prevent them from coming lose/rattling out due to firing your AR15/M16 (similar in performance to safety wire for electrical connections on aircraft or vehicles).  The bolts/screws themselves are torqued down (I can't recall the specs at the moment) and hold the carrier gas key in place on the bolt carrier.  You then push some of the material of the key into the screws to keep them in place.

Here's an example of staking...

Please understand that I'm a slowbrainer......

But proper stalking almost looks like it would be the same as welding... has anyone done that?

I would think that welding may cause heat stress and warp things. by the way, I have a 24" RRA varmit and like it very much. am waiting on a complete 16" upper elite car from them to put on a newly purchaced RRA lower. best gun for the money.
