I have a question for you Colt guys...

I just lucked out and bought a NIB blue label pre ban Colt 6520 or "Gov't Carbine" (with the small push pin). After receiving the weapon which was new and unfired, I noticed that the blue label of my rifle's box is marked:

              Colt Sporter Rifle
    Model       Caliber      Serial NO.
    R6520      .223          /GC 010 xxx/

The model #, and Caliber are hand written in a white blank spot, and the serial # appears to be the factory label which is typed/printed. I have a feeling that the box isn't original because it isn't marked AR15A2 (which isn't a big deal because the rifle is 100%), and I was wondering if one of you Colt guys could confirm if the box is original or not ?

Thanks,

If the SN#is the same as the Colt printed label then whats the problem save for an upper swap in the past.....................and if original then yeah that sucks.

FWIW, the GC prefixes are somewhat goofy and don't seem to follow much of anything. Call Colt and ask them how the AR left the factory. They keep very good records.

Are you worried about someone swapping uppers onto the original SN# lower only?

I'm 99% sure that the rifle is all factory/original. I'm just not sure about the box...

Whoops, goofed up, it's the GS prefixes that are goofy. The sporter name has been around a while and predated the "ban".

1981...I have two of these "Blue Label" Government Carbines and both of the boxes are marked "Sporter" I know for a fact that the two I have are in the original boxes, so I believe your box to be correct.
The rifles I have are both pre-LEO roll mark, small pin receivers.
Hope this helps...

How is the rifles lower marked?Everything I see marked govt carbine or even on the lower is usualy and A1 type SP1 lower.I had a blue label HBAR sporter from 92 that had a 2 screw front but had the A2 improved lower with .170 diameter FCG..late 92 early 93 they started coming out with the front push pin.

Great! So it sounds like it is a factory box. On your label is the Model, and Caliber typed or written ? The lower is A2 spec. with the front small screw (but is drilled for the front small push pin). The lower is marked:

                                     Colt
                                 AR15-A2
                                 Gov't Carbine
                                 CAL. .223
                                 SER. GC0101XX

1981...Both of my boxes have the model number typed, the caliber is typed as 5.56, and the serial number is the typed factory (small) sticker that is then applied to the larger blue label.
Someone has hand written ".223 REM" and the letters 'MM" for millimeter in the caliber box so that it reads ".223 REM 5.56 MM" with the "5.56" being the only part that is typed.
