Hey all, I recently acquired a SPR clone. I am wondering about headspacing, basically if I need to or not. It has a plain old DPMS BCG, unstaked and nothing else special. Say I wanted to replace the BCG (and in case I have the wording wrong, I mean everything including the bolt), would I need to headspace it, or should it be good to go? The SS barrel has approximately 500 rounds through it. Sorry if this is a noob question, but I did a 3 months back search and came up with nothing that answered my question. Thanks for the info all! Edited: Unstacked to Unstaked...whoops! |

The barrel/extension is headspaced by the manufacturer. Unless something was machined wrong (barrel. extension, bolt), the new bolt should provide for proper headspace. If you are concerned, Brownells does sell the gauges for 26 bucks a piece. You need at least the no-go or field guage. If the bolt closes over the either of these gauges you know you have a problem. http://www.brownells.com/aspx/NS/store/ProductDetail.aspx?p=19183&title=.17%20-%20.22%20CALIBER%20RIFLE%20HEADSPACE%20GAUGES |

If a bolt closes on a 'Field' gauge, all the user can do to bring things back in to spec is replace the bolt. If a new bolt still closes on the gauge... replace the barrel. I checked a worn to shit SP1 which passed with flying colors. With the cost of ammo today, chances are I'll never wear out an AR in my lifetime. |
