I have a RockRiver 9mm upper with a 1/2 x 36 tpi treaded muzzle break. I am looking for a tap that I can convert a  Standard AR 1/2 x 28 tpi muzzle break to the 1/2 x 36 tpi. Any information you can give will be helpful. Thank you Tim Grasman

Cannot be done unless the threads are welded filled, then redrilled.

Mcmaster Carr in Santa Fe Springs, CA

or possibly your local home depot/lowes

As above though, this won't work unless you can weld the old threads up, redrill nice and centered and tap the weld material.

ETA: Ranier Arms sells a 9mm version of the Smith Vortex for $45 and Model 1 Sales sells a 9mm version of the A2 flashhider for $20, not sure what thread they are though. Rock River also sells an A1 version for $12.50 that is 1/2-36

edited because keith j is right, can't find that tap at any of the normal sources that I know

Not exactly the answer to the question you're asking, but Model 1 sells barrels with 1/2 x 36 threads and they were able to supply me with a Phantom with that thread pitch. If you can't easily accomplish the thread conversion you're after, they may be able to put you onto an FH that'll work with your present thread pitch.

Not going to find a 1/2" x 36 TPI, not a standard tap.

Just an up date. I was able to locate the Tap and change the threads from 1/2 x 28 TPI to 1/2 x 36 TPI

How did you manage to just change the threads?  You can't just retap to a different thread pitch of the same size.

Well, you can, they just won't be as strong as properly done threads and won't keep the hider straight on the barrel.

Just don't try it with a brake.

The ½ x 28TPI has less threads then the ½ x 36TPI so it was able to add the additional threads. The flash hider was installed with a torque wrench, set to the proper timing. I know that it is said it will not work, but I had to try it and with +P+ 9mm round the flash hider did not loosen and was removed after firing and re- set to the proper torque with no disruption to the threads.
